Campanelle has a debut in Giant’s Causeway
Started her season at the top, many winners group 1 Campanelle beat 12 competitors to win the 2022 debut at Keeneland in $162,475 Shares of Giant’s Causeway.
Stonestreet Stables-owned intern Wesley Ward placed fifth and held the pace until moving into third at the stretch where she picked up and passed Lawrence Goichman’s Star Devine to cross the wire first. She finished with a final time of 1:01.98 for 5 1/2 feathers on a “good” course.
The runner-up, like the winner, took the first place in 2022 in Saturday’s race. She hasn’t started since acquiring the Galway Stock in Racecourse Saratoga last summer for coach Jorge Abreu.
Checking behind the top two are Goin ‘Good’ who finished in third place, one and a half behind Star Devine and ahead of last year’s winner, Change of control . The second person goes down the lane but ends up in fourth place
Ward was elated with the win and credited racer Irad Ortiz Jr. for masterfully driving the filthy dog.
Ward said: “I told Irad to work his way, there is a lot of work to be done fast… Irad is the man of the moment. “He always put them in place, he was very patient. It was a decent horse, he rode a nice track.”
“I just followed the instructions,” Ortiz added. “Wesley told me to try to get close to the speed horses, and that’s what I did. She flew home when I asked her to run.”
.’s 4-year-old daughter Zodiac made her comeback after a six-month hiatus after finishing third in the Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes (G3T) last October. Ward said her next start will likely be on June 18 at Royal Ascot in Diamond Jubilee Stakes (G1).
Later this year, the little girl will probably go to Australia.
When asked about a potential start at Breeders’ Cup back to Keeneland in November, Ward said that only time will tell.
“Obviously she won a beautiful race today… I wouldn’t want her in Golden Palace right now, “Ward talks about her Breeders’ trophy-winning peers.” I had dinner (with Barbara Banke of Stonestreet) last night and we talked about maybe The Everest ($15,000,000 sprint) in Australia. We have to get through the summer and see how things go and see how she does.
“She did great; she loves it here in Kentucky… She ran a big, big race today and we’re really excited.”
Bred in Ireland by Tally-Ho Stud, Campanelle non-Namid mare (GB) wins shares Janina , who has four winners out of five who start. Her offspring include the winning mare Qafliah people earning $116,663.
