The story takes place right before that Jaguar Launched the E-Type in 1961, the company asked the British government to waive the mandatory front plate. The government refused. That’s why the first E-Type had a giant sticker on its hood, “9600 HP,” the coupe’s own sticker with “77 RW.” The quest to avoid degrading a vehicle’s advanced design continues to this day, and California could have provided a solution for everyone: Jalopnik report now the state allows stickers to be used as front license plates.
The California State Legislature has taken nine years and five bills to get to this point, and the program is still in beta. In 2013, the California Senate mandated DMV with thoughtful ways to avoid the annual situation of sending stickers and tags to vehicle owners. A company in Huntington Beach, California called License Wrap presents its idea to put license plates on the Senate in 2014. Once approved, LPW passed a series of tests with the California Highway Patrol, then succeeded with a test program involving the 28 vehicles of the fleet.
The discovery program has been expanded and is open to the public. For interested CA residents, the first step to boarding is to make sure your check-in is current. Visit the LPW page and choose from a menu of eight disc types. Provide license plate information – the same details you give the DMV, plus the vehicle’s mileage. Here’s the analogy: LPW doesn’t use credit cards, so you can only pay with PayPal or by deposit, money order, or cashier’s check. The cost is $85 plus tax, up to $93.89, and that’s the DMV fee for special plates. Delivery takes three to six weeks, and for the purposes of the pilot program, the LPW needs to be notified when the wrap is installed. And realizing that this is a previous license plate replacement program, the stickers need to be placed where the police and cameras can still read them.
Finally, the company recommends using stickers only on vehicles with good paint, which says “Removing LPW will not damage the paint if the vehicle is in original or high-quality paint.”
The bill leads to a program that would require the California DMV to “evaluate the use of alternatives to stickers, tabs, license plates, and registration tags, subject to certain requirements….” That is. License plates in general, and California are not required to be affixed on the front plate, only on the rear. We suspect that if this is widely accepted by the public and the police department, the back may well be a cover.
