BYD ‘overwhelmed’ by demand, plans massive EV expansion


New electric vehicle importer entering the Chinese market, giant BYD says it can deliver up to eight EVs in Australia by 2024, including e-vehicles, thanks to a new global platform and Well-funded right-hand drive production line.

BYD, backed in part by Warren Buffett and better known for its batteries and electric buses, is now embarking on a global expansion and sees Australia as a potential powerhouse with a growing footprint increase in Europe.

Fresh without revealing about $45,000 BYD Atto 3 Electric SUV in February before shipping from the middle of the year, the company will now focus on offering a small electric (EV) hatch and sports EV sedan by the end of 2022, or possibly early 2023 if supply stalled.

While it briefly sold BYD T3 EV and E6 MPV vans, the Atto 3 was its real first episode.

The following year, a larger EV SUV and – big news – an electric pickup, are on the carousel.

The ultimate goal is a maximum of 8 EV models by mid-2024, and the aspiration to be a top 5 brand overall, supported by specific right-hand drive Chinese production lines in Australia.

This will be phenomenal growth out of nowhere, driven by BYD’s confidence in Australia’s growing electric vehicle entry and ongoing comparative supply shortages for key competitors’ inheritance’.

These huge claims come from Luke Todd, CEO and chief executive officer of EVDirect.com.au, BYD’s nominated Australian importer, with whom we spoke this week.

“We were overwhelmed with not only buyers, but also people interested in the product. For some people, BYD is a new brand and they have never heard of it, but for others, BYD is a highly anticipated brand,” said Todd.

“[We are] excited about the amount of deposit we have made [on Atto 3]. We are very comfortable on our way to becoming the second largest electric vehicle company with deliveries this year,” he added, specifically referring to Australia.

This second statement indirectly refers to the dominant player in the Tesla market, that sold last year tick over 12,000 Model 3s here. Contrast everything else Combined EV maker sold 5149provides some indication of how far BYD hopes to take.

Mr Todd would not disclose the specific number of orders currently placed through EVDirect.com.au, which is guaranteed by a deposit and offered with low-interest financing deals like a sweetener.

EVDirect.com.au recently joined a memorandum of understanding With Australia’s largest dealer group, Eagers Automotive is publicly listed, with plans to have around 20 fixed-price retail sites by 2024, adding to its online store.

Mr. Todd adds that an existing agreement with Mycar, an independent repairman formerly known as Kmart Tire & Auto, to act as an additional supply and service partner, says the method is a “multi-channel” approach designed to suit all types of buyers.

On the product front, Todd claims the Atto 3 will be first joined in 2022 with the $35,000-$45,000 EA1 EV, sold in China as the Dolphin.

He also wants to launch a sleek new sedan called the BYD Seal (in China) here before the end of the year or early 2023, although the name chosen remains unclear. There are spy photos of Seal in testing all over the internet, check it out.

In 2023, the focus is intended to shift to the BYD Song Pro Plus SUV, which is larger than the Atto 3 and the enigmatic electric pickup.

Mr. Todd said BYD’s manufacturing capabilities and growing demand for electric vehicles are expected to help meet this target in 2021 as Kia.

“There’s no reason when we have four to five models, there’s no reason why it can’t be achieved. The market is moving very fast, most manufacturers are moving to the EV platform, and BYD has always been at the forefront of the game,” emphasized Todd.

BYD’s new 3.0 electronics platform for electric vehicles can provide up to 800V charging in some application and use of the company’s proprietary Blade Blade Lithium iron phosphate Battery – these are the that reports suggest Tesla wants to use.

In a fascinating insight, Mr Todd also said each new BYD model line is likely to make in China which, in the guise of driving right for Australia, is 15,000 units a year. That’s eight models, each with a minimum annual delivery range of 15,000 for this market.

Mr Todd added: “The bulk production and delivery to Australia separated us from the package.
