Every few years, a collaboration pops up that shakes things up, surpassing hundreds of collaborations that launch each week and then show up everywhere. In 2020, there’s Gucci x North Face, followed by Fendi x Skims in 2021. And now, almost three months from 2022, we have this year’s top duo: Cult Gaia x Bratz.
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles-based fashion brand, founded by Jasmin Larianposted a bunch of Instagram announcement post, which begins with a message showing a text message being typed on the Motorola RAZR (#throwback) that says “See you tomorrow for something special”. A few hours later, another post was shared, this time, a video shows girls with a passion for fashion — Yasmin, Jade, Cloe, and Sasha of the Bratz Doll series — driving a car with the license plate “BRATZ4EVR”. That’s when I, somewhat of a Bratz expert, knew what was to come.
You see, what a lot of people don’t know is that Larian and Bratz have a long history. Daughter of Bratz Doll Creator, Carter Bryant, Larian grew up with cult dolls. In fact, she even said L’Officiel in a 2017 interview that the world of Cult Gaia was “inspired by the aesthetic of Bratz dolls.” So naturally, a collab was on the cards at some point. It was. The only question is when.
As of Wednesday morning, my questions were answered — and with an equally 35-piece collection of Y2K-esque clothing, shoes, and accessories.
