Buell’s motorbike is turning away from its motorsport heritage with the upcoming Buell Super Cruiser, a club-style hot-rod cruiser designed by Roland Sands and based on Harley’s famous FXR chassis heritage- Davidson was originally created by Erik Buell. The bike was unveiled on February 10 at a special party at the Roland Sands Design complex in Long Beach, California, attended by Kevin Duke, editor-in-chief of our sibling publication , American racer.
The Super Cruiser concept begins with a conversation between Buell’s CEO, Bill Melvin, and renowned customizer Roland Sands. Just by seeing a sketch from Sands, Melvin approved the idea and greenlit a prototype built on top of Buell’s existing sports car powertrain.
Sands told Duke: “FXR was our muse for this bike. “For the core customer of the V-Twin engine, the FXR truly represents the core of the motoring industry and that is the aesthetic we borrow for this bike. It was an honor that Erik Buell was involved in the design of that bike (FXR) and that gave us plenty of time to build this bike with Buell.”

Sands roared the Super Cruiser in front of the launch attendees, powered by Buell’s 175-horsepower V-Twin engine to celebrate.
Sands, who is no stranger to building sport-focused cruisers, said: “When Bill first approached us about building a high-performance cruiser powered by a Buell engine, it just It’s as if the car was designed by itself. “Given Buell’s history and market demand for a true high-performance cruiser and the build quality of existing Buell chassis, engine and rolling elements, the project is a a natural fit.”

“I have been working on projects like this for more than 20 years,” continued Sands, “and this is the first time we have been able to build a high-performance cruiser without sacrificing V-Twin performance. typical in terms of weight and engine width and length.”
Although the Super Cruiser is only in the development stage, Buell representatives are excited to put it into production in 2025.
“The design fits the West Coast setting, where customization is part of bike culture,” says Melvin. “And Roland is excited about incorporating Buell technology into that culture, creating the fastest, most exciting cruiser on the market.”

The Super Cruiser uses a new tubular steel frame surrounding Buell’s liquid-cooled V-Twin engine, adding up to 175 hp in a package that weighs just 450 lb.
Combined with Buell’s existing upside-down forks, aluminum swingarms, wheels and the company’s unique perimeter front brake system, the result is a machine that Sands considers unsuitable for its aspirations to be a powerhouse. High performance bike.
“For me, this is the worst thing right now – this style, this bike style,” he told Duke. “It stops, it goes, it rolls, it gets around corners very well, it’s comfortable and it saves gas. You just jump on the bike and instantly feel tougher – it’s pure attitude. When you’re on the bike, it makes you feel like a wreck, and that means something.”
Melvin thinks building a cruiser is something Buell has always contemplated. “The market is full of American manufacturers known primarily for their big, heavy bikes – not the fast, snappy bikes like the famous V-Twins of the 1930s.
