Buccaneers ‘WR Mike Evans catches up to milestone, continues with football

Mike Evans did not overlook this.

In “Monday Night Football,” Evans had his 72nd career touchdown pass, surpassing full-back Mike Alstott for the most total touches in Buccaneers history. The pass was caught with 7:31 remaining in the third inning to give it a 24-10 lead against the Giants.

Tampa Bay went on to win 30-10.

And although Evans seemed to have considered throwing the ball into the stands of Raymond James Stadium, he continued to hit his big milestone as he turned to leave the field.

“I’m very proud of that achievement. Hopefully, I can extend it far,” Evans said. “A-Train is an unbelievable player. Just happy to be on the same sentence as him, let alone break his record, then it’s a blessing.”

It’s the second significant touchdown Evans has scored this season, but the first he hasn’t given to a fan. At the beginning of the season, he caught Brady’s 600th touchdown pass and sent it to the stands. The entire team had to go back and give fans a game ball and promise an autographed jersey to restore the football milestone.

Since Evans joined the league in 2014, he’s been a boring machine. His 71 touchdowns are more than any player in the NFL since his debut, with Antonio Brown the closest to him being 68.

Of course, most of those seasons were spent with the team playing relatively poorly. The Bucs finished outside of last place in the NFC South just twice before the 2020 season and with a score of 34-62 ahead of an appearance by Tom Brady in Tampa Bay.

Since Brady’s arrival, the Buccaneers have had an 18-8 aggregate record in the regular season with the Super Bowl title.

“It’s a lot different,” Evans said. “I just spoke to Breshad Perriman, who was here in 2019 and he hasn’t seen a home game like this before. Sell almost every game, look like a team. The real NFL. It feels great to be a part of this team, and it’s great to be back on the winning column.”
