Brown Eyes Another Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Chad Brown, 29 on the time, actually loved successful his first Breeders’ Cup occasion in 2008 with Maram within the inaugural operating of the Gray Goose Juvenile Fillies Turf. How a lot? A lot that he figured he would possibly as effectively make it an annual affair. Or no less than strive.

As his secure grew, and purchasers turned hungry for an increasing number of Breeders’ Cup success with younger runners, Brown went on to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf once more in 2014 with Woman Eli, in 2016 with New Cash Honey, in 2017 with Dashing Fall, and in 2018 with Newspaperofrecord. The coach’s 5 wins in that single race characterize a big chunk of his 15 Breeders’ Cup trophies.

At Del Mar on Nov. 5, Brown will angle for win quantity six with Klaravich Stables’ Consumer Spending , winner of the Selima Stakes at Laurel Race Course Oct. 2, and the impressive maiden race winner Haughty , a daughter of Empire Maker owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron, and Team Hanley.

With a full gate of 14 fillies all but assured, this 14th running of the one-mile race comes up deep in contention, requiring a good post at the draw and luck on the 180-degree turns—all that before arriving at a final straight far shorter than any of the invading cohort ever has faced before.

Such a hard fact of topography weighs heavily on the shoulders of the European fillies gunning for a share of the $1 million purse, and history’s scoreboard provides cold comfort. Only two the 13 Juvenile Fillies Turf winners have been trained abroad.

With few exceptions, this 12 months’s group has been uncovered solely to straightaway programs at locations corresponding to Newmarket, Ascot, Longchamp, Deauville, York, and Chantilly. A type of exceptions passed off at Goodwood in late August over a delicate, right-handed seven furlongs within the Tote Status Stakes (G3), wherein British champion jockey Oisin Murphy normal a last-ditch run from the Siyouni  filly Mise En Scene  to win by a neck.

Significant Euro form also goes through Malavath , who defeated colts in the Criterium Maisons-Laffitte over soft ground at Chantilly; Hello You , who has bided her time for trainer David Loughnane since winning the Unibet Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket in late September; and Zain Claudette , who was rolling along on victories in the Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes (G3) at Ascot and the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (G2) at York before appearing to hit the wall of her pedigree in the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) at Newmarket.

That leaves Cachet , who flies the colors of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing for trainer George Boughey. Even though the daughter of Aclaim has yet to win a stakes in seven starts, she was a brave second in the Rockfel and third to British division leader Inspiral  in the Bet365 Fillies’ Mile (G1) at Newmarket. Cachet also has early foot, which could give jockey James Doyle valuable options.

Representing North America, the Brown pair will be joined by stakes winners Sail By , Bubble Rock , California Angel , Koala Princess , Turnerloose Cairo Memories , who broke her maiden in her first start at a mile on the grass at Del Mar, and grade 1 stakes-placed Pizza Bianca .

California Angel breaks from the far outside in the field of 14 with a relatively short run to the first of two turns, though her trainer George Leonard, seemed unfazed by her draw.

“There could be a lot worse post positions,” he said. “She’ll be on the outside and can control her own fate from there.”

In addition to his five winners, Brown has had another 14 deemed worthy of running. Clearly, the race has become a stable priority as he sorts through each year’s draft of 2-year-olds.

“You sort of see it early, that they first could be way above average,” Brown said. “Then, having won this race a handful of times, you look at the way above average group to see if any of them come to the next level. Because I know generally what it takes to win this race, or at least be very competitive, if I don’t think a filly is up to it, I’ll want to speak up.

“The Breeders’ Cup is a wonderful event, especially for someone who hasn’t participated yet. But for me, I’m not looking for a couple of paddock passes. I’m looking to bring only horses I think can win.”

Both Brown fillies have won races on a variety of ground, from yielding to firm. He was asked where they fit on his Breeders’ Cup scale of ability.

“Consumer Spending is right about there,” Brown said. “She’s not in that top group of horses we’ve brought to this race in the past, but she’s done enough that I can’t keep her out. She’s an improving horse, she’s trained good, and her sire, More Than Ready, has had a tremendous Breeders’ Cup record. I just wish her numbers were a little faster to give me a little more hope she could land in the winner’s circle.”

Haughty, who will be making her stakes debut, has finished first twice by daylight but was disqualified in her debut.

“Because of the DQ we just ran out of time with her,” Brown said. “Otherwise, she would have been in a stakes before this.

“But she’s always trained like she was special,” Brown added. “Her last number was good. And she’s fast enough.”
