British toddler killed by Jeep while on holiday in Ireland | UK News

A British baby was killed by a Jeep while on holiday in the Republic of Ireland.

It is understood that the boy, under the age of two, was staying at a property in Roscommon County with his parents.

Irish police said the boy was hit by a car near Ballinagare shortly after 9am on Friday.

He was treated at the scene, but was later declared dead. His body was taken to the morgue at Galway University Hospital for an autopsy.

No other injuries were reported from the collision.

The boy was killed near the house where he and his family were staying. It is understood that his parents visited the area regularly.

Fianna Fail councilor Paschal Fitzmaurice said members of the local community were “shocked and saddened” by the child’s death.

“Our thoughts are with the family on this sad occasion. I want to send my condolences and let them know that they are in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.

Tom Crosby, an independent councilor and cathaoirleach of the Roscommon County Council, said the community has been devastated by the “terrifying accident”.

“It was a horror,” he added.

“As the council’s representative, I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to the boy’s family, friends and all neighbours. What a tragedy.

“It’s unfortunate the way it happened. It’s a close-knit community and the area is absolutely in shock.

“It’s not a typical place for holiday homes but it’s a quiet spot for visitors.”

Police are appealing to passersby who may have footage to give them and any witnesses to access.
