UK’s PACT supports coffee producing communities in Veracruz, Mexico with climate change mitigation projects.

UK’s PACT undertakes a project in Mexico to helping coffee producing communities in the state of Veracruz mitigate the effects of climate changeseek to improve their quality of life through the planting of tree species that are beneficial to preserving the biodiversity of their ecosystems and benefiting these communities more broadly.

The project includes the development of a methodology for agroecological selection and management of species with high carbon sequestration potential, as well as efforts to conserve native tree species of the Veracruz Mountains. The project also aims to benefits small coffee producers by planting trees that improve quality of life communities, taking into account the possible utility and cultural aspects of each species.

Before commencing activities, the project implementation partners received training on gender equality and social inclusion. During three days of participatory workshops, two gender experts – from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and FCDO – led discussions on gender, the role of men and on effective communication. results from a gender perspective.

The main objective of the workshop was to raise awareness of the provisions set out in British law, which oblige all international cooperation programs to take into account the perspective of gender equality and social inclusion. This project is therefore expected to be carried out with an interest in acknowledging the realities and perspectives of women and other vulnerable groups involved in coffee farming. This is for the purpose of ensuring that the benefits derived from this program will contribute to narrow the gender gap and promote truly inclusive economic growth.
