Book Review: Climates of the Past, Present and Future – A Scientific Debate – Are you interested in that?

Kip Hansen’s Book Review — November 12, 2022

Dr. Javier Vinos is a trained and professional laboratory biologist, studying things you and I have never heard of and things we haven’t even thought of for a second. Topics like:AG Protein-Coupled Receptor Phosphatase essential for Rhodopsin function“; “Notch down-regulation by endocytosis is essential for pigment cell determination and survival in Drosophila retinas.“; “Autophosphorylated protein kinase activity in the titin .-like arthropod project” and “Signals in the 29 DNA-terminal protein template to initiate phage φ29 DNA replication“.

But Life interfered with Javier’s academic and intellectual path, as he explains in the preface to his new book:

“In the late summer of 2014, I was walking alone “Camino de Santiago” (Saint James’s Way) from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela, near the Atlantic coast. It’s an ancient pilgrimage route that once had its heyday during the Medieval Warm Period and declined with the Black Plague, but has seen a modern resurgence as a cultural route. and the spirituality of Europe which is now one UNESCO World USAewebsite ritage. I walked 750 km [466 miles] in a month to visit from Atapuerca archaeological site, famous for The predecessor Homo and neanderthalensis ruins, to the medieval architecture of northern Spain. I had to think a lot after the recent death of my parents in less than two years. What kind of world are we leaving to our children and grandchildren? During the long days at “El Camino”, I had a lot of time to think deeply about the passage of time and the change of the world and its people through prehistory and history. A proof that I can see before my eyes. As a (laboratory) biologist, I am familiar with the effects of global warming. Not only can I remember the colder winters of my childhood in the early 1970s, but I can also attest to the lengthening of the growing season, the earlier arrival of insects over the years. , or the recent decision of some migratory birds to stay in Spain until the end of 1970. winter instead of migrating to Africa.”

“One of my decisions was to start blogging to explore the dangers of global warming in the fall of 2014. It’s easier to research and understand things when one person has to explain them. others. As a scientist, when information is needed, I do not rely on second-hand opinions. I go directly to the evidence and the scientific literature. But in my plan to warn the world about the dangers of climate change, I found a problem. The evidence that the planet is warming is clear (I knew it), although no warming has taken place in over a decade. The evidence that we have significantly increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is already clear (I know that too). What is not clear is the evidence that carbon dioxide causes warming. It is clear that warming began long before carbon dioxide levels rose rapidly. “

As a result, Dr. Vinós began serious research into climate science, its past, present and ideas for the future. He created an extraordinary book, titled: “Climate in the past, present and future – A scientific debate, now in its second version. Also available elsewhere: Barnes and Noble (hardcover and e-book), Google books (eBooks), Koko (e-book) and more.

EVEN BETTER: By special arrangement with the author, The complete book is available from the WUWT server as a .pdf file, completely free of charge.

This book has been a long time coming. Originally featured on Dr. Judith Curry’s blog, Climate, etc.where the kernel evolved into this book has been presented in a ten-part series that begins with “Nature Unbound I: The Frozen Cycle“In October 2016. Dr. Curry wrote a sequel to the book with the following conclusion:

“After reading this book, I am perhaps more worried about an upcoming ice age in a few thousand years than about the possibility of catastrophic warming due to greenhouse gas emissions over the span of a century. 21st century. If Vinós’ analysis is correct, thinking that we can control Earth’s climate by reducing CO2 emissions could turn out to be the craziest thing in the 21st century. This is a debate. that we need to have”.

Dr. Vinós addresses the following topics, in what sometimes seems to be serious detail. He is a scientist by a scientist, and leaves no loose ends in discovering and explaining:

– Milankovitch cycle

– sudden glacial event (Dansgaard-Oeschger)

– Holocene climate change

– 1500 year cycle

– Solar operation

– volcanic eruptions

– Greenhouse gas

– Energy transport

– and more….

If you want to better understand what caused the Earth’s climate in the past and what causes the climate it is today; if you want to better understand the complex and complex factors that have created and continue to create our ever-changing climate, Then this is the book for you.

This is not a book you can take to Florida and read on a warm tropical day in the sun – it is not an easy read. It’s a science book and written like a book, full of figures and illustrations with careful explanations. The book is conveniently divided into thematic chapters with a complete list of references at the end of each chapter.

Reading this book won’t provide all the answers to climate mysteries, but it will bring you closer to the truth – scientific answers to the best of current knowledge. us – not involved in the politics of “Climate Science”. You will feel much better educated regardless of your starting point.

Author’s comments:

I’m a bit slow to write this review but pardon my self-imposed claim that I read word for word, look closely at every illustration and drawing, check references carefully and most importantly I personally understand what the author wrote. Given the breadth of this book, it’s not a quick task.

Anthony Watts, the owner of this blog, has graciously allowed Dr. Vinós to make available free copies of the .pdf file of this book as downloads from this website. Click here to listen.

Better yet, buy the e-book version from any of the vendors linked in the essay – fair prices and “worker worthy of him wage “.
