BMW Malaysia DC fast charger joins ChargEV – price is about 50% off, currently RM108 max per hour

It is reported that the DC fast chargers of some BMW dealers in Malaysia are now available on the ChargEV network, completing their planned integration. With this, paying ChargEV members can now check charger availability, and pay and start charging their electric vehicles using the app.

The majority of dealers equipped with BMW DC chargers are available on the ChargEV, with the sole exception of Auto Bavaria, which continues to use its own payment service. With this greatly reduced charge pricingas members have to pay RM240 yearly subscription to use the network.

The modification rate is as follows:

  • DC 30 and 60 kW chargers – RM 0.60 per minute of use
  • DC charger 90 kW – RM 0.90 per minute
  • DC charger 120 kW – RM1.40 per minute
  • DC charger 150 kW – RM1.50 per minute
  • DC charger 180 kW – RM 1.80 per minute

Looking at the pictures above, all chargers up to 60 kW (formerly RM1.40/min) are grouped into the same 60 sen class, which is the old for 30 kW chargers. Prices for all other chargers have been nearly halved, dropping 90 sen for the 90 kW charger, RM1 for the 120 kW and RM1.80 for the fastest 180 kW charger (the ones at Millennium Welt KL North currently limited to 150 kW and therefore cheaper).

As far as we know, only Tian Xiang Premium Auto, which operates in Ipoh and Butterworth, has offered BMW owners a price tag for its 120 kW charger – also halving to RM1 per minute. The only exception to the brand’s nationwide fee is Regas Premium Auto Kuchingwhere its charger (limited to 120 kW, according to the ChargEV app) seems to be free to use.

As a result, charging your EV is now much cheaper at BMW chargers. Lower part remains the same, cost RM36 per hour with 30 kW charger as at Seong Hoe Premium Auto in Melaka, although this price now also extends to 60 kW chargers like the one at Auto Quill in Petaling Jaya. At the top end you will now need to pay RM108 per hour for a 180 kW charger as at Wheelcorp Premium in Setia Alam, down from RM216 per hour previously.

The hourly rate isn’t entirely representative of the actual price you’ll pay, as the faster the charger, the shorter it will take to refill your battery. Use a 180 kW charger per BMW iXfor example you will only need 20 minutes to charge it from 20 to 80%, now it will cost RM36 – exactly the price you pay to plug it in for an hour with a 30 kW charger and you won’t even achieve the same charged state at the end.

It is unknown if this updated price will be limited to paying ChargEV members, although it is likely to be. Of course, most if not all electric vehicle owners are subscribed to the network, as the RM70 annual fee entitles the free use of many of the service’s AC chargers.
