Blackjack: how you could beat the dealer

One of the most iconic casino card games of all time, Blackjack, also known as Twenty-one, is said to have originated in 1700s France. Whilst variations similar to the game have appeared all throughout history, modern-day Blackjack is, in fact, deemed as one of the most popular casino classics.

With a low house edge and the ability to play live Blackjack online as well as in a land-based venue, gameplay has never been easier to access. So, read on to discover what it takes for you to beat the dealer, as well as some top tips that could enhance your gaming experience…

How to play

To play Blackjack, you’ll place your bets and then the dealer will deal out the cards anticlockwise. The game is usually played with between one and eight decks of cards to eliminate any chances of card-counting. First, one card is dealt to each player face-up, then one face-up to themselves. Then, another is dealt face-up to the player, and another is dealt to themselves, but face-down.

Each card is worth its face value, with face cards being valued at 10 and Aces being valued at either one or 11, depending on whichever suits your gameplay the most. The aim is to get your hand as close to the value of 21 as possible, or simply higher than the dealers, without going over. To do this, you can decide to stand, hit, double down, split or surrender.

How to win

The main objective of Blackjack is to beat the dealer, and you can do this by drawing a hand value that’s higher than the dealer’s, by the dealer drawing a hand value that goes over 21, or by drawing a hand value of 21 on your first two cards when the dealer does not. However, you can lose to the dealer if your hand exceeds the value of 21, or the dealer hand has a greater value than yours at the end of the round.

Remember, Blackjack is a game of chance, and whilst there are certain moves you can make that may increase your chances of beating the dealer, a win is never guaranteed. But, with this in mind, here are some top tips many players use in an attempt to enhance their gameplay:

  • Find the best Blackjack table

Playing on tables where a Blackjack pays out 3:2 rather than 6:5 or worse, is better, as less decks in play will lead to a lower house edge.

  • Learn basic strategy

Over the years, mathematicians have found that there is an optimal way to play each and every hand that could be dealt to you. In order to do this, you should learn basic Blackjack strategy so that you’re aware of all your options, no matter what cards you find yourself with.

  • Don’t take insurance

The insurance bet isn’t usually worth your time, as you are essentially betting that the dealer has a ten-value down-card to go with their Ace upcard. A winning insurance bet pays 2:1, but the odds of winning are actually worse than this.

  • Use a strategy card

Plastic laminated strategy cards are legal at many casinos, and can be used to refer to, to make sure you are always making the best decision for every hand dealt to you.

  • Remember, other players don’t matter

Finally, remember that the other players around the table have no impact on your game, as it’s just between you and the dealer.
