Black Hole Police Discover First Inactive Stellar-Mass Black Hole Outside the Milky Way


A team of astronomers known as the black hole police have discovered the first dormant stellar-mass black hole outside the Milky Way. Black holes discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

For the first time, a black hole of dormant stellar mass has been detected outside the Milky Way galaxy. And who discovered it? Black Hole Police. That’s right, a group of astronomers known for their discoveries of pseudo-black holes known as the black hole police have been credited with this discovery. Interestingly, the galaxy where this stellar-mass black hole was found is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way known as the Large Magellanic Cloud. A satellite galaxy is a smaller companion galaxy that moves along with the host galaxy in a fixed orbit.

The discoverer and the discoverer are both notable. The Black Hole Police are a group of young astronomers who have gained a reputation as skeptic about increasing black hole discoveries and taking their time refuting false claims. And after years of exposing others, the team made its first discovery. And the discovery went into the pages of history. Published group paper recorded the first dormant stellar-mass black hole outside the Milky Way in Nature Astronomy, a peer-reviewed journal.

Black hole police made the first discovery

According to these astronomers, the black hole, named VFTS 243, is in a dormant state. An inactive black hole does not emit as high levels of X-ray radiation as active black holes, which also makes them more difficult to detect. Follow the Earth Sky reportresearchers were able to find this black hole after spending countless hours passing through 1,000 massive stars in the Tarantula Nebula region of the Large Magellanic Cloud.

“We have identified ‘a needle in a haystack’.” For the first time, our team has jointly reported a black hole detection, rather than a black hole rejection,” said Tomer Shenar, lead author of the paper.

VFTS 243 is also a stellar-mass black hole, which means it was formed by the gravitational collapse of a star and weighs as much as nine Suns put together. It also orbits a hot, blue star, 25 times the mass of the Sun. Because of how rare the find is, the black hole police can’t help but be skeptical of their own discovery.

“As a researcher who has discovered potential black holes in recent years, I am extremely skeptical of this discovery,” added Shenar. He was not alone in his doubts. His co-author, Kareem El-Badry of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, shares the same suspicions. He said, “When Tomer asked me to double-check his findings, I was skeptical. But I can’t find a reasonable explanation for the data that is not related to the black hole.”

Now, it seems, after being published in a peer-reviewed journal, that their discovery is indeed plausible.
