For example, the price of gas will slowly rise to less than $3 a gallon. Motorists in many countries pay more than Americans, and they seem to have adapted by driving significantly more efficient vehicles.

A carbon tax would also serve two other goals. First, it will help balance future budgets. Tens of millions of Americans will retire in the coming decades, and so many budget experts agree that the federal budget cannot balance just spending cuts. We will also need substantial additional revenue, most of which can be generated from a carbon tax.
