Biden condemns Trump for attacking Haitian immigrants with false pet-eating stories

Joe Biden has attacked Donald Trump, although unnamed, on Friday for speaking out about a false rumor that dogs and cats were being eaten by Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.

“I want to take a moment today to say something that—so many Americans, like Karine, as you pointed out, a proud Haitian American—a community is under attack in our country right now. It’s just wrong. There’s no place for black people in America,” Biden said at a White House event celebrating black excellence. “What he’s doing has to stop. It has to stop!” The president’s comments came shortly after remarks from the White House press secretary. Karine Jean-Pierre, who mentioned being Haitian-American. Speaking as “the first black, openly gay White House press secretary and, I must add, a proud Haitian-American,” Jean-Pierre said of Biden: “I can tell you that representation is very important to him. Our voices are very important to him. Our views are very important to him and our success and our community are very important to him.”

Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, promoted a disproven claim that Haitian-American immigrants in Ohio were kidnapping and eating people’s pets. During Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Trump declared: “A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so ashamed of it. In Springfield, they’re eating dogs. People who come here, they’re eating cats. They’re eating—they’re eating the pets of the people who live there. And that’s what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame.”
