Bet to $2.25 Million Total on 85 Days Delaware Park Encounter
The date of the 2023 live race season at Delaware Park was approved by the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission today.
The 86th live race season will feature 85 race days starting on Wednesday, May 24 and ending on Saturday, October 28. The live race will be conducted on Wednesday, Thursday, and Thursday. Friday and Saturday, except for Fridays on the following days — May 26; 28/7, 4, 11, 18, 25/8; and October 27.
The $500,000 Class II Delaware Handicap on July 8 highlights a $2.25 million betting schedule. All classified and listed staking races will be running Lasix for free in 2023. For the first time in the history of the dirt and mare summer classic, the 86th renewal will be contested. one mile and three sixteenths. The race has been held at the traditional one-mile and one-quarter distance every year since 1951, with the exception of 2020 when the race was held at one-mile and one-eighth due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before 1951, the race was held at a distance of one mile sixteen.
“It’s becoming more and more difficult to consistently attract top contenders in the fat and horse categories with one-mile and one-quarter races, but we also want to respect the distance aspect of tradition as much as possible. as much as possible,” said Racing Director Jerome “Jed” Doro. “We hope the shorter one-sixteenth mile will encourage more of the top contenders in the league to come in while keeping the race appealing to those who want a little more points.”
The $150,000 Pin Park and $100,000 Radiant Beauty will also be held as part of the Delaware Handicap card.
The $300,000 Class III Delaware Oaks will be held on Saturday, July 1 with a $250,000 Class III Robert G. Dick Memorial and a $100,000 Alapocas Bet.
The 31st Owners’ Day Showcase showcasing the best of the best in the Delaware race is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 9. The day will feature the George Memorial. $100,000 Rosenberger, $100,000 DTHA Governors Day, both limited to horses that have begun at Delaware Parks in 2023 (excluding bet races); Monument to Robert W. Camac and the Rich Glazier Turf Classic.
The $100,000 Little Wonder and the $100,000 First State, Delaware-Bredded or Certified 2-year-olds only, will be held Wednesday, September 27 and Shop $100,000 duty-free shopping and $100,000 New Castle, available only to hybrids or certified aging horses, will be running on Thursday, September 28.
