Bad news. Clouds will obscure meteors for most of Washington state
I am disappointed. It looks like clouds will make tonight’s meteor shower impossible for most residents in Washington State.
The most recent visible satellite image shows a lot of clouds in the area. But the real threat is the clouds stretching east from the WA Cascade. High clouds are moving westward west of WA. There are lower clouds over NW Oregon…they will evaporate around sunset.
Infrared satellite image, highlighting high clouds (white) clearly shows the problematic cloud field.
The latest NOAA/NWS HRRR cloud forecast at 10 p.m. tonight (time of maximum meteors) shows 100% cloud (in blue) over much of Washington, but low cloud covering parts of the west Oregon.
Northwest Oregon is where you need to go if you’re a serious meteor watcher. And the further south you go, the sooner the sunset…another advantage!
The latest NOAA/NWS National Blend of Models forecast provides a similar story (see below).
