Ok, we get the basics there. And the photos show quite a bit about the bumpers. But what about this whole Chevy switch? Convert to what? V8 engine? V6? Female Title 4? That remains a mystery because the seller didn’t bother to describe it further, norake little effort to lift the hood for an engine bay photo.
Consider the lackluster ad copy and the appearance of the car with the surfboard on the roof and the clown’s nose paint jobI wouldn’t be surprised to see a seller appear to look like Jeff Bridges’ Big Lebowski sloth icon, right down white russian in hand.
Whatever the embodiment of the seller’s “Dudeness”, we will have to work with what we have and shake this Benz fairly. This is a Ponton car, so called due to its combined fender and hood lines that resemble floats. Internally designated as W105, this model has adapted the W128 model’s longer nose to a shorter onewheelbase housing of W120. That allowed a straight-six transmission to be fitted, creating what in modern parlance would be considered an E-Class vehicle.
According to the ad’s description, the bodywork actually looks straight. Its bright red paintwork, while seemingly out of place with the typical Mercedes stoic personality, also offers a bold element to the car. The more modern alloy wheels aren’t as appealing as the original cases, but at least they’re in the family line.
The cabin is a bit more problematic. In it we found velvet upholstery, some rat fur rugs and a large portion of the floor next to the driver’s seat which the seller mysteriously had MS P on.Are not-more ed. What is that all about? An aftermarket hot-bar shifter rises from the center tunnel, suggesting that the “Chevy convertible” comes with an automatic. The tiny brake pedal assumes the car was originally a manual transmission. An aftermarket sunroof has been popped through the roof on top of all that.
In favor of the car, having a clear title and an overall fun factor can make this a great weekend race with a little fanfare. Could that be worth $5,900?
