Apple’s new MacBook Air M2. Why do I hate myself for wanting it

In recent years, Apple perfected art.

No, it is not the art of lifting your soul to the clouds and forcing you to burn with joy.

It’s the art of doing just enough to tempt you.

I upgrade my iPhone every few years because the new blue looks so good. Or, ah, now there’s (not at all great) 5G.

And every year, I wonder if Apple will come out MacBook Air that, at least in a small way, would be glorious.

I’ve used Air since Air. I have always believed in the unbearable lightness of being. The lighter the laptop, the better my life.

I know you will praise me for the performance, but the atmosphere is quite enough for me. A relationship is based on looks – hey, I’m just human – but also on a laptop that can do what I need it to do when I need it to do it.

For years, however, Apple ignored the Air. The company seems to believe that laptops will soon become obsolete, being replaced by iPad is not a computer.

My irrational desires.

However, last year the M1 chip hit the air and suddenly it became relevant again. When that happened, I was forced to buy the M1 Air, when I dropped my previous Intel Air which made it impossible to close.

The M1 Air doesn’t have any compelling images that stand out. But that chip suddenly freed me (mostly) of the charging cable. With the previous Airs, if I get two hours of battery life, I feel lucky. Now, it’s twice that.

But still. i look at New M2 Air and feel an unreasonable desire.

I know it’s wrong. I loathe myself for being tempted. But it has some sad beauty.

Except for the notch, of course, which I already use on my iPhone, but would still be frustrating on an Air. Got a much nicer screen. And this thing even comes with a matching color charging cable. You see, Apple really cares.

Sadly, there is much more.

Apple furiously corrected two things that would make a significant difference. For me, at least.

First, it’s body shape. I’ve never confessed this to anyone before – I grew up a Catholic, so shame is always around – but I have repeatedly cut myself on the particularly sharp edges of my watch. His Air.

I do this twelve hours a day or more. Sometimes my hands and arms get careless and it leaves marks.

Therefore, it is interesting to see the thin end of the wedge become flatter. If it’s really as mild as Apple claims, this could save minor injuries. (For pride, you understand.)

Shall I burn oil at midnight?

And okay, I was touched by midnight colors. I know I shouldn’t, but over the years my Air has had some sort of gray/silver finish, so a new color has more appeal than it should have. (Did I mention I use this machine all the time? Did I mention I hate myself?)

There is another side to the M2 Air, which is both sad and glorious. It’s the return of MagSafe.

I don’t know whose idea to get rid of it, but I fear that person has been removed from some basic reality. The magic of MagSafe lies in its sheer design genius.

So can I recommend you the current status of my MacBook Air M1 charging cable? Background: I bought this M1 Air last November.

The cable is terribly frayed. Of course, you’ll tell me it’s my fault. I will just introduce you to my previous Air charging cable was unreasonably strangled after a month.

I want – must – believe that MagSafe’s reunion will at least prevent some friction. Other risks, too.

Finally, my Honda Accord?

This isn’t enough to buy a new Air, is it? Or is it? It could be, especially since the M2 chip hopes to make it even faster.

Then I pause to admit that Apple is charging an extra $200 for the M2 Air, so that’s not a big deal. Then again, an Apple store salesman said to me, not long ago, that the old Air is just Honda Civic. Could this be my Honda Accord?

When that is your primary work tool, then the temptation will be there. I can transfer my current Air to my wife to get her out of the PC habit. I might even sell this Air – when I get a new charging cable.

One month left to think about it. The M2 Air won’t be available until July.

However, I fear that Apple has done just enough. Again. And I hate myself for being afraid of it.
