The Takata airbag problem still onwalking. Almost a decade after it began with many deaths and millions of vehicles being recalled, sadly, people still die from faulty airbags. Today, NHTSA has release a newsletter announced that another accidental death was linked to a faulty Takata airbag, this time involving a Honda. This is the fourth such death recorded in the US this year.
OneS Reuters reports, NHTSA has confirmed that a crash in February 2022 in Bowling Green, KY, involved a 2002 Honda Accord resulting in an airbag-related death. That brings the total number of Takata airbag-related deaths worldwide to 30, 23 of which occurred in the US. The agency urges owners to inspect and see if their vehicle is involved in the ongoing large-scale Takata airbag recall and if so, replace the airbags immediately.
“Whatever you are doing, stop immediately and check if your car has a Takata tankbag recall. If that’s the case, make an appointment for a free repair as soon as possible,” urged NHTSA administrator Ann Carlson.. “If this airThe bag breaks on impact, it can kill you or someone you love, or leave them with serious, life-changing injuries. Every day that goes by when you don’t get a breath of recovered airReplaced bags put you and your family at greater risk of injury or death.”
As reported by Reuters, Honda’s records show that the Accord was purchased by the owner in 2008; car manufacturer order to recall the vehicle in 2011, and states that more than 300 attempts have been made to contact the owner, who never completed recall repair.
The news comes shortly after another fatal accident involving Takata airbags. Last month, it was confirmed that the Ford Ranger driver was killed in a crash this summer due to a malfunctioning Takata airbag.
