Anniversary: Nintendo Switch is now 5 years old
Yes, it’s official, the tiny and fun hybrid from Nintendo, the Switch, is now five years old. That is if you are in Japan, Australia or equivalent time zones.
We’ve got celebratory content gearing up for this remarkable anniversary, although it’ll roll out on ours March 3 like most of of our team in Europe and North America. Take this as our acknowledgment that we understand how time zones work.
The Switch also deserves a party, especially when you think back to where Nintendo was before it came out. The Wii U struggled commercially – failed, if you want to put it bluntly – and the 3DS fought and tried to find a way to earn respect. To take the hybrid handheld console approach, Nintendo took a gamble and put its figurative eggs in a basket. Five years later, it’s clear that the move has really paid off, with the system still going strong and having surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii.
In Japan, which is the real content of this celebratory post, the system continues to dominate the weekly charts, both in terms of software and hardware sales. In Nintendo’s home country alone, the Switch has sold more than 24 million units.
So we raise our glasses to the Nintendo Switch, we just hope it surprises when we do reality celebration in the coming days.
