A closer look reveals that peaceful protests hailed as generating political change tend to coincide with more direct and sometimes violent tactics of fighting for the same outcome. This contrasts the “rational” mainstream with the “radical” mainstream in a way that can favor change.
For example, civil rights protests in the 1950s and 1960s in the deep south of the United States were extremely controversial at the time, in part because of the public disorder they caused. What should we conclude from this opinion piece? How quickly were political students at the University of Reading scored when they concluded that blowing up operators or oil pipelines was the only way to solve the climate crisis? Are students at Cambridge in trouble if they think it’s wrong to hurt people, to reduce global carbon emissions?
In my opinion, these university academics are planting a lot of malicious ideas in the minds of impressionable teen and early 20s students who look to them for guidance. . These scholars seem to be teaching Martin Luther King Jr succeeded because violent radicals backed him up. This twisted historical interpretation seems to be their rationale for violent eco-activism.
Their example of nonviolent eco-terrorism, deflation of a tire on an SUV, is an act dangerous recklessness may lead to loss of life. SUV owners and other drivers or passengers could die if they don’t realize their tires have failed.
In my opinion, the actions of eco-terrorists like Tire fire extinguisherDeflating a tire and hoping no one gets hurt is like planting a bomb, then calling the police and hoping they clear the area in time to prevent casualties. Both types of perpetrators could argue that they don’t really want people dead – but their actions endanger lives in the name of a political cause.
The truth is that no one needs to commit to violence to reduce carbon emissions, all that is needed is for green zones to support some zero-carbon nuclear power plants. France demonstrated this in the 1970s, by converting most fossil fuel plants to nuclear. The excuses for nuclear rejection make no sense in the face of the success of French nuclear and the utter failure of renewables to provide value.
This fact won’t stop impressive young men from being radicalized into atrocities, because people like these scholars have incited them to kill people with hatred in the name of saving the world. McLaughlin and Jubb could have been really careful in instigating their followers to commit murder, even though their tire deflation example came close, but in my view, killing will lead to such thinking, once the green extremists realize their inferior tactics have not produced the results they have. would like.
