NS Echo Show 15 may be Amazon’s newest smart display – but it’s unlike any previous model to date. While still sharing the familiar company moniker, the new Echo Show 15 doesn’t sit on a table or counter like its predecessors. Instead, it is destined to the wall, hanging like a work of art or a TV.
Officially announced at Amazon’s Fall Launch Event, you can pre-order it now for $249.99, though it won’t start shipping until December 9th.
Alexa smart display for your wall
Amazon’s Echo Show 15 replaces the active Alexa smart display formula with a 15.6-inch display that can be hung on a wall. And it aims to do so much more – like stream content, act as a digital whiteboard with customizable widgets, and often take over as a super smart home dashboard. We imagine it would work best in the more public spaces of your home, like the front entrance or the kitchen.
The obvious difference with Display 15 is that it is designed to be hung on the wall. And although it can be placed in portrait or landscape orientation, the main focus is on the 15.6-inch 1080p display with anti-glare coating. This significantly larger screen real estate, paired with borders and frames makes it more like a digital photo frame or Samsung Frame TV than your typical smart device.
Once you’ve decided on where and how to place it, you’ll find the Echo Show’s interface is compatible with both touch and voice. Amazon also lets you customize it further, letting you choose from local conveniences like shopping lists, smart home controls and notes, or even apps from third parties. With two widget sizes, you can design and stick with the layout that works best for you. Better, if you have The doorbell rings or one Flashing camera, motion alerts can be displayed as picture-in-picture on the widescreen monitor.
Here, the Show 15 can almost feel like a smart home console combined with a digital whiteboard. It’s basically a grid system that allows you to place elements into a block. Amazon is also rolling out a shared family calendar, which should be a useful hub.
And, to personalize the device even further depending on who is using it, Echo Show 15 will also come with something called a Visual ID. Although optional, enabling the feature allows the Show 15’s camera to scan your face and learn to recognize it – then change the look to one that suits your preferences, Customize Alexa responses to your queries. Visual ID is not exclusive to the Show 15 and will be rolling out to other Echo Show devices soon. Similarly, the updated UI will also appear on other Display devices in the near future – although on smaller screens you’ll need to swipe to access the widgets.
When it comes to viewing content, the 15.6-inch screen easily delivers a more immersive experience. And since it can be hung on the wall, it can be the perfect appliance to place in the kitchen or family room. Amazon already offers Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, but the company has promised access to TikTok and Sling TV soon. Speakers are built-in, but don’t expect a significant amount of bass here, as the Show 15 is, like most TVs, much slimmer and thinner than the substantial one. Display 5, 8 or ten.
Another piece of the puzzle is Amazon’s AZ2 Neural Edge Processor. This is the second generation chip made by Amazon and built on Echo fourth generation. The upgraded processor will allow the Echo Show 15 to respond quickly to queries and questions, and should be faster and more natural. AZ2 Neural Edge also allows Visual ID to be processed entirely on-device, meaning none of this information will ever be sent to the cloud. And yes, you can ask Alexa on the Echo Show 15 anything – just like any other Echo.
