AltRider slide for Yamaha Ténéré 700

When I consider protecting a motorcycle for traveling on multiple surfaces, my first priority is the soft aluminum bottom, aka the crankcase. Hard to repair in the field and expensive to replace (more than $1,400 from an online source), those intricate castings are the inner sanctum for the engine and tranny. Like most OEM skids, Yamaha Tenéré 700Its 2mm-thick aluminum body is enough to ride on smooth dirt roads, but it doesn’t provide enough protection against the severe rock impacts that can occur when roads deteriorate. For something more substantial, I turned to AltRider for 4mm thick aluminum sheet, TIG welded by hand in USA.

It attaches to four stock-like mounting points with included stainless steel hardware and four rear frame bolts, unifying the chassis. AltRider’s compact design keeps the plate close to the motor to prevent ice and debris from accumulating; protection of header pipes, oil filters and auxiliary switches; and ventilated in critical areas to dissipate heat. The oil viewfinder is still visible, just a little harder to see.

To complete the armor pack, I also sourced AltRider’s Linkage Guard, a 6mm piece of high-density polyethylene that fastens to the tail end of the plate. Located directly below the T7’s exposed rear suspension joint, the flexible guard helps the vehicle slide over obstacles while limiting impact to vulnerable suspension components.

The slide-plate installation video on the AltRider website is a helpful guide during installation, showing how to hold the front spacers in place with a little grease while lining up the screw holes. My 700 comes equipped with an OEM hub, which complicates matters a bit, as the base’s thick mount shares the bracket mounting points used by the back of the plate. There are some pictures that would be helpful for getting things organized and getting the bolts in place, but persistence and some colorful language brought the date.

The test began in the wilderness of Nevada, with cries and rattles rising from below as the T7 conquered rocky peaks and roadbeds turned into creeks. The extra-thick metal and sturdy welded construction gave me the confidence to pass or smack anything in my path – which is good, because sometimes there’s no choice but to dash. front. The abuse continued in California, where the back road into Bodie State Historic Park dumped more rocks and rubble. Damage rating: no, to bike or disc (not counting scratches), and no small rocks left around between the crankcase and its armor.

Looks like I’m satisfied. The slide is priced at $383.97 or $405.97 with the guard, in powder coated black or a transparent silver finish.
