They are called a pair of shoes inside Alpinestars sales and marketing materials, but the Faster 3 shoes are really a cross between a shoe and a boot. The Faster footwear line has been in the Alpinestars line for a while, and this third iteration is a significant upgrade over previous products.

Gear selection is an exercise in personal preference and compromise. The Faster 3 shoes are an object lesson in this concept. I have both fully armored and high heel sneakers and some sort of turtleneck boots in my closet. These sneakers are extremely comfortable both for cycling and cycling but very light in terms of protection. These boots offer optimal protection, but are rigid, uncomfortable, and slightly uncomfortable during extended walks. The Alpinestars Faster 3 shoe can be combined between these two extremes.

The Faster 3 is an armored, upper-ankle, lace-up model with a substantial cut in the Achilles area for enhanced mobility. I’m sure you can already see the advantages.

Let’s start with the safety features. The Faster 3 shoes now carry the important CE certification in each of their variants: Rideknit, Drystar and standard version (as tested). There’s a subtle, low-profile TPR toe slider and an ultra-protective and supportive TPR heel. Dual-density ankle guards are inserted between the microfiber upper and cushioning lining on both sides of the shoe.

In terms of spectral comfort, the aforementioned cut at the back of the boot offers a level of front-to-back mobility that turtlenecks can’t match. The sole is semi-rigid with an integrated support shackle, providing a solid foundation while providing comfortable walking. This shoe feels supportive and comfortable both on and off the bike. I’ve identified no pressure points or allusions for comfort on full-day rides. Ventilation is more than enough.

Lace design is another advantage of this shoe. I really like the ability to tweak the fit with the laces; however, a loose lanyard on the trunk of a motorcycle can cause problems if the lanyard gets thrown around. Alpinestars provided a solution by including an easy-to-operate Velcro strap to secure the shoelaces while riding. The design works well and is easily adjusted with gloved hands.

The Faster 3 shoes really shine on the bike. That semi-rigid sole provides good ride feedback while also transmitting pressure from the foot to the entire arch. The ankle mobility makes shifting and braking seamless and nimble. The low profile box toe facilitates movement between lift and downshift.

I call the Alpinestars Faster 3 shoes a winner for urban trips and light touring. While not as protective as full boots, the compromises are well balanced and carefully designed. The $169.95 retail price puts the Faster 3s on the ballpark alongside other premium riding shoes.

The Alpinestars Faster 3 shoe is available for $169.95 in six color options and sizes 6-14.
