Attorney Debra Katz said Sunday an allegation of sexual misconduct led to the firing of CNN primetime speaker Chris Cuomo.
Katz said her client, who she declined to name, came forward after Cuomo made an online comment regarding concerns about sexual harassment issues and later revealed that he had helped him. His brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, responds to sexual harassment allegations.
“Hearing that Chris Cuomo’s online statements were hypocritical and disgusted at the attempt to discredit these women, my client sought advice from an attorney to report misconduct. his serious sexual assault against her for CNN,” Katz said in a statement.
She reported the allegations to CNN, she said, and offered to provide “documentary evidence” of her allegations.
“My client came in at this point because she felt that by sharing her story and related materials, she could help protect other women,” Katz said.
Steven Goldberg, a spokesman for Chris Cuomo, released a statement earlier Sunday denying the allegations.
“To the extent that they were sent to CNN to deny what Chris Cuomo had told his audience, he completely stands by his stance on his connection to these issues, both professionally and personally. If the goal in making these things Goldberg says the false and unpublished allegations was to see Mr. Cuomo punished by CNN, that could explain his unwarranted termination of the contract.
Saturday news network said fired Chris Cuomo after “new information” came to light during an assessment of how he helped his brother do damage control during a sexual harassment scandal.
Chris Cuomo was originally put in a indefinite suspension after the New York State Attorney General exit documents suggest that the TV personality had a much larger role as an advisor to Andrew Cuomo’s aides than was previously known.
