All photography educators should have fun like these boys

Geraint and Rob are old friends to have fun with their photography. They are all good photographers and most importantly have a lot of fun taking pictures. The real joy they found in the creative process is evident and makes this video worth watching.

The Outsiders is a new YouTube channel that offers educational videos in a fun way. This is the second video they have released.

It may come and go, but this Halloween-themed video includes some helpful tips for wildlife and macro photography in the “spooky” woods.

In the video, they discuss lighting and visual backgrounds. Geraint talks about how to take close-up shots without a macro lens and get a wider field of view for mushroom shots. He offers some tips for photographing spider webs.

Rob looks at the fox’s signs and talks about tracking them.

They briefly mention the lenses they use – both are OM System ambassadors – but the techniques they are discussing apply to any system. The main purpose of this video is to teach forest photography techniques, not to promote a toolkit.

Even if you are a proficient macro or wildlife photographer or they are genres you are not interested in, this video is still worth watching just for fun. It’s not like it’s scripted. It wasn’t made to Hollywood’s highest standards, not even to the standards of the 1960s Hammer Horror movies it mocked. But that dispassionate approach adds to the realism of the video. It definitely makes me laugh out loud. It’s a good reminder, if nothing else, that we should enjoy our photography.

Their first video is just as interesting and well worth seeing.
