All of the EVs coming to Australia: Electric car calendar

Electric vehicle sales are spiking in Australia, albeit from a very low base, with all States and Territories now offering purchase incentives in various shapes and sizes.

Lack of customer choice is a problem for those wanting to get a new EV, however. Buyers in Europe, North America and much of Asia have far more electric cars to choose from.

Many of Australia’s car brand executives say they battle to convince their overseas bosses to allocate EV stock to us – in large part because Australia lacks a CO2 emissions-reduction scheme.

Regardless, the number of EVs that are now locked in for an Australian launch over the next couple of years suggests the tide is turning.

There are fewer than 20 all-electric models on sale today today from 14 brands. But an additional 35 EVs from a total of 24 brands are slated to arrive before the end of 2023 – stock permitting!

Audi e-tron GT

Arrives September 2022

Audi’s Porsche Taycan equivalent has already been priced, and deliveries commence in September this year. It’s a sexy, sleek fastback with nearly 500km of range, and a RS halo product that hits 100km/h from standstill in 3.3 seconds.

Arrives first quarter of 2023

BMW’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Tesla Model Y is coming to Australia in the first part of 2023. The new, 4.5-metre-long iX1 will slot into the range underneath the iX3 SUV, and become Bimmer’s new entry BEV.

BMW i7

Arrives fourth quarter of 2023

BMW’s new flagship sedan range will become available in the fourth quarter of 2022. It mightn’t be everyone’s plate of bratwurst, but the electric BMW 7 Series should be easy to find in the car park!

BMW iX M60

Arrives fourth quarter of 2023

Cheaper iX models are here already, but the halo iX M60 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup that produces 455kW of power and 1100Nm of torque. BMW claims the iX M60 can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h.

BYD Atto 3

Arrives middle of 2022

This China-made BYD Atto 3, a renamed version of a car called Yuan Plus, will be sold online kicking off at $44,381 before on-road costs, with deliveries estimated to begin in July. BYD’s importer is promising to have strong supply levels.

Cupra Born

Arrives first quarter of 2023

Cupra’s first electric car, the Born, will be in Australia during the first quarter of 2023. The compact electric hatch, which shares its MEB underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.3 that remains off the table for our market, is currently undergoing local testing.

Fiat 500e

Arrives first half of 2023

Stellantis Australia has finally been able to confirm it will bring the Fiat 500e electric city car here, with expected arrivals commencing in the first half of 2023. The small, retro-cool electric vehicle (EV) was always on the local arm’s wish list, but production has largely been dedicated to Europe.

Ford e-Transit

Arrives mid-2022

Ford Australia’s first electric vehicle will be the e-Transit, set for launch in mid-2022. The brand says an initial network of 20 dealers will have specialist EV workshop equipment to service the e-Transit, though this will grow as demand and its range of EVs grows.

Ford E-Transit Custom

Arrives during 2024

The Ford E-Transit Custom electric van will be sold in Australia, but won’t be available to suburban delivery drivers and eco-friendly tradies until 2024. The electric E-Transit Custom will be Ford Australia’s third electrified model after the bigger E-Transit and Escape plug-in hybrid.

Genesis GV60

Arrives third quarter of 2022

The Korean luxury brand has three EVs on the way, with the headline act being its ground-up new GV60, which shares components with the similarly radical Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

Genesis Electrified GV70

Arrives third quarter of 2022

The Genesis Electrified GV70 mid-sized crossover will be priced between $105,000 and $115,000 before on-road costs. That’s cheaper than luxury rivals including the BMW iX3, Audi e-tron 50 quattro, and Mercedes-Benz EQC400.

Genesis G80

Arrives third quarter of 2022

The Genesis Electrified G80 large sedan will be a steeper proposition: priced between $140,000 and $150,000 before on-road costs. For reference, this is around the same price as the Tesla Model S Long Range before pricing was removed from the company’s website.

Arrives late 2022

Rapidly expanding Great Wall Motor has confirmed what we already suspected: the imminent Australian arrival of its first all-electric car. It’ll likely be sold here as the GWM Ora, and will arrive here a few months after its UK launch.

Kia Niro

Arrives third quarter of 2022

Kia’s brand new, second-generation Niro crossover will arrive shortly as a budget-friendly electric option to compete at the market’s lower end against the likes of the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Kia Niro Plus

Arrives late 2022

Kia has confirmed its Niro Plus, a low- or zero-emission option for taxi drivers and rideshare operators, is coming to Australia before the end of 2022. Based on the previous Niro, the Niro Plus is 10mm longer and 80mm taller than the first-gen to maximise space in the cabin.

Lexus RZ

Arrives 2023 (expected)

The RZ450e uses Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, which serves as the underpinnings for the Toyota bZ4X, as well as the Subaru Solterra. The company’s Australian division says it “would love to get it” but it’s currently unable to lock in confirmation of local timing. We understand 2023 is likely.

Lotus Eletre

Arrives 2024

The electric Lotus Eletre SUV is likely to be priced in line with a range-topping Tesla Model X when it arrives in Australia. The brand’s upcoming all-electric hyper-performance SUV has been designed in the UK, but much of its engineering has been done in Wuhan, China where it’ll be built.

Maserari Grecale Folgore

Arrives 2023 (expected)

Maserati’s hyped new crossover SUV competitor for the Porsche Macan arrives in petrol form in early 2023, while the all-electric Grecale ‘Folgore’ should come later that year. The Trident brand plans to electrify its whole range over the next few years.

Mercedes-Benz EQA 350

Arrives mid 2022

The dual-motor EQA 350 variant is about six months behind schedule, after Mercedes-Benz originally planned for a late-2021 introduction. High global demand and ongoing component and supply issues have no doubt contributed to the delay.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

Arrives second half of 2022

The new EQB is earmarked for an Australian sales launch during the second half of 2022 according to Mercedes-Benz Australia. Revealed over a year ago, the EQB is to the GLB what the EQA is to the GLA.

Mercedes-Benz EQE

Arrives fourth quarter of 2022

The flagship Mercedes-Benz EQS is getting a little brother on the same platform. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE is due in Australia in the second half of 2022. Mercedes-AMG, the Affalterbach-based performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has officially revealed its worked-over versions too.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

Arrives first half of 2023

If the EQS liftback is an electric S-Class counterpart, then think of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV as an electric GLS, complete with an available third row. It’s the third model built on the dedicated Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), following the EQS and the EQE sedan.

Mercedes-Benz eVito and eVito Tourer

Arrives second half of 2022

Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia is rolling out its first electric vehicles in 2022. The mid-sized eVito panel van (314km range), and eVito Tourer eight-seat MPV (361km range), will offer commercial operators two new choices.

Mercedes-Benz EQV

Arrives second half of 2022

The electric EQV is a more luxurious people-mover, offering range of up to 356km thanks to its 90kWh battery. It’ll be priced above the more utilitarian eVito.

MG ZS EV update

Arrives third quarter of 2022

MG’s budget ZS EV, Australia’s second top-selling electric car after the Tesla Model 3, will get a significant update from July this year to keep the momentum up. Two variants will be offered this time, kicking off at $46,990 drive-away before rebates.

Polestar 3

Arrives during 2023

The Polestar 3 will be a sleeker counterpart to the next-gen Volvo XC90 which shares its ‘SPA2’ platform architecture. For competitors, think Audi e-tron among myriad others. Not only is the Polestar 3 the Swedish-Chinese company’s first SUV, it’ll also be its first made in the USA.

Porsche Macan EV

Arrives in late 2023

The 2023 Porsche Macan will be the brand’s second all-electric model of the modern era after the Taycan and will debut the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) for the brand. It’ll be sold alongside an updated version of the current petrol-powered Macan.

Renault Megane E-Tech Electric

Arrives in late 2023

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is the French brand’s answer to the Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona Electric, MG ZS EV, Volkswagen ID.3, and numerous others. It would, of course, be remiss not to mention the bigger Tesla Model 3 and Model Y too.

Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric

Arrives first quarter of 2023

Renault, which produces the only electric van presently on sale in Australia, will seek to double down on its lead by launching the new-generation Kangoo E-Tech EV in early 2023. Company management told us to expect first arrivals in January.

Renault Master E-Tech

Arrives in 2024

Renault Australia says it will expand its range of electric vans by bringing the updated Master E-Tech EV here, with an expected arrival during 2024. The French EV’s impending arrival will be music to the ears of fleet companies and owner-operators that have been crying out for zero-emission freight options in Australia – to no avail.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Arrives in late 2023

The Spectre is the Rolls-Royce’s first production electric vehicle (EV), and represents the start of its transition to an electric-only range by 2030. Although the Rolls-Royce Spectre won’t arrive in Australia until the fourth quarter of 2023, the company has started taking deposits.

Skoda Enyaq

Arrives in early 2024

Skoda has at last confirmed plans to bring the full Enyaq iV electric vehicle range in Australia, but production shortages mean it won’t be ready to start taking orders until the second half of 2023. Based on the current timeline, deliveries probably won’t start until 2024.

Subaru Solterra

Arrives in the first half of 2023

Subaru is gearing up to sell its first electric car in Australia. The Solterra will touch down during the first half of 2023, but Subaru has a left-hand drive development car on Australian soil already.

Tesla Model Y

Arrives in late 2022 or, more likely, 2023

The Tesla Model Y SUV will reportedly be priced around $70,000 before on-road costs when it goes on sale in Australia, but ongoing Shanghai production hold-ups mean the car keeps being delayed. Tesla doesn’t really do public relations.

Toyota bZ4x

Arrives first half of 2023

Toyota Australia has been forced to delay the launch of its first all-electric vehicle, the bZ4X crossover, until the new year. The Toyota bZ4X was jointly developed with Subaru – which offers the Solterra – and sits on the co-created e-TNGA electric architecture.

Volkswagen ID.4

Arrives in late 2023

It looks like it will be late 2023 before the ID.4 arrives on Australian shores, so you have plenty of time to think it over. It’s a twin-under-the-skin to the Skoda Enyaq crossover.

Volvo C40 Recharge

Arrives in the third quarter of 2022

Volvo’s first model not to offer an internal combustion-engine option, the C40 Recharge, arrives in Australia this year priced from $74,990 before on-road costs. Deliveries of the electric crossover will begin in the third quarter of this year.

Arrives mid-2023

From mid-2022, Volvo will expand the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric offering to include both the new Single Motor and existing Twin Motor variants of the electric SUV, coinciding with a mild facelift.
