After getting over the sticker shock, we really enjoy our time with AirPods Max when we review them for the first time. These premium headphones look great and are comfortable to wear for hours on end, and feature magnetically attached ear cups that are easy to remove and clean. They also impress in terms of sound quality, which is superior to favorite over-ear headphones inside Sony WH-1000MX4.
You’ll get more bass on a Sony can, although we found the Apple headphones to offer a wider soundstage allowing us to hear individual parts of a track more clearly. AirPods Max also supports Apple’s Spatial Audio technology, which enables immersive 360-degree sound on supported tracks, movies, and shows. And because this is an Apple-made pair of headphones, they pair instantly with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and support features like Find My Follow and hands-free Hey Siri support for navigation. The AirPods Max’s active noise cancellation is one of the best we’ve tried on a pair of headphones, as it did a great job canceling out the noise of our daily commute. They also feature Transparency mode, which, like on the AirPods Pro, will amplify the sound around you to help you be aware of nearby cars and pedestrians when you’re walking.

That said, there are some limitations here. Apple’s cans gave us about 20 hours of battery life, solid enough for a couple of days of typical use but not quite matching the epic 30 hours the Sony WH-1000XM4 gave them. I. We’re also not a big fan of the AirPods Max’s carrying case, which only really protects the outer ear cups and leaves the rest of the earphones exposed.
We must also mention that the Sony WH-1000XM4, our pick for the best headphones overall, is on sale for almost half the price of AirPods Max at $248. If you just want a great-sounding pair of cans with great sound, noise cancellation and battery life, this is the way to go. But if you’re mesmerized by the attractive design of the AirPods Max and want something particularly good in Apple’s ecosystem, this could be as cheap as they’ll get for a while.
