A passenger plane in Culiacán, Mexico opened fire shortly before takeoff on Thursday as the Mexican military arrested the son of the notorious former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The military thwarted their plans, but more violence broke out returned to the ground when the gang faction led by the remaining sons of “El Chapo” – known as “Los Chapitos” – retaliated by firing on civilians as well as military forces.

Streets were closed as commercial trucks were set on fire amid shootings. And gang members even tried to kidnap doctors from hospitals to treat the injured. So far, there are at least 29 report deaths, with 19 gang members killed and 10 Mexican soldiers.

The federal government has instructed Culiacán’s residents to shelter at home, but the city is reeling from the attack. The extradition of Ovidio Guzmán to the United States is pending, but a question remains; if extradited, he will be sent to a maximum security prison — away from any retaliatory attacks or subsequent attempts to get him out.
