Mr McMichael, 65, his son Travis, 35, and neighbour Mr Bryan, 52, who filmed the incident, say they pursued Mr Arbery with a purpose to make a citizen’s arrest – allowed on the time underneath Georgia legislation – as a result of they suspected he had stolen from a close-by building web site.
