After suffering burns beyond recognition, the rescued cat is reunited with its owner thanks to a microchip
As wildfires ravage the town of Superior, Colorado, hundreds of animals are trapped in the deadly blaze. One of those pets was a 9-year-old cat named Merlin, which escaped through a sliding glass door while its house burned.
“I couldn’t imagine what he saw through his little cat’s eyes,” said Merlin’s owner, Camden Hall. 9 News. “It must be pretty horrible.”
But even though Merlin escaped with her life, the 9-year-old cat didn’t make it out of the wildfire unscathed. When rescuers found the cat screaming for help from a neighbor’s porch, the cat was so badly burned that rescuers couldn’t even tell what color the cat used to be.
“The best rescue of the night was a badly burned kitten meowing on the porch of the only house standing on another completely ruined block,” Written Soul Dog Rescue, which is racing to save animals affected by Colorado’s most destructive wildfire on record.
The injured cat was quickly taken to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. Once Merlin was stable, rescuers used the cat’s microchip to find its owner.
“Anyone who doesn’t think microchips work or are worthwhile should take it as an example,” rescuers explain On Facebook. “This kitten was burned beyond recognition so we couldn’t tell if it was orange, brown, black, etc. The chip helped identify it despite other factors.”
Merlin has a “long road” to recovery ahead, according to Rescue the soul dog, is seeking donations to cover the cat’s substantial medical bills.
“Some of his skin is peeling off (including around his nose) and he will need considerable attention to avoid infection and other problems,” they reported on Facebook.

Despite that, Hall (who also established a GoFundMe . page to help fund Merlin’s medical bills) is only relieved to be reunited with her loving cat, who clearly has some extra luck on her side.
