After Killing Roe v. Wade, Trump Pretends to Be a Moderate on Abortion

Donald Trump Trump has spent the past several months trying to portray himself as a moderate on abortion. In April, after suggesting he was open to a nationwide ban on the procedure, he announced he would not sign the bill into law during his second term. On Monday, he told a group of Republican officials that he supported a new party platform (reportedly drafted by his aides) that softens the language around abortion and does not explicitly call for giving embryos or fetuses constitutional rights.

For this reason, you might find yourself thinking that Trump is not a clear and present danger to reproductive rights, and that voting for him will not have dire consequences for abortion rights. And you would be very, very wrong!

The only reason Trump pretends to be moderate on this issue is because he knows that extreme positions on abortion have cost Republicans elections. He is completely untrustworthy when he tries to convince people that he will not continue to undermine abortion rights, and the many reasons we know include but are not limited to the fact that he:

  • Supreme Court justices are nominated with the specific goal of overturning Roe v. Wade
  • Constantly brags and takes full credit for killing people Caviar
  • Lie about how many people you want Caviar ousted
  • The proposal to leave abortion law up to the “states” is a good one, even though he knows many of those states have outright abortion bans.
  • Said that “states” would decide whether they wanted to track individual pregnancies to punish those who had abortions
  • Similarly, states can decide whether to punish doctors who perform abortions.
  • It has been repeatedly and insanely claimed that Democrats support “post-birth” abortion.
  • Told a group that wanted to “abolish” abortion that he would “stand with them”

Meanwhile, for all its moderate abortion language, the Republican convention platform still reads: “We proudly defend the family and life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that no one can be denied the right to life or liberty without due process and that states are therefore free to pass laws protecting those rights. After 51 years, for us, that power has been given to the states and to a vote of the people. We will oppose late-term abortion while supporting mothers and policies that promote prenatal care, access to birth control, and IVF.”

In particular, anti-abortion advocates have praised the section on the 14th Amendment. Susan B. Anthony, president of Pro-Life America Marjorie Dannenfelser saidNew York Times:“It is important that Republicans reaffirm their commitment to protecting unborn life today through the 14th Amendment.” Ralph Reed, “The Republican platform makes it clear that the unborn child has a right to life and is protected by the Constitution under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment,” the president of the Faith and Freedom Coalition told the news outlet.

Yes, and that’s where the previous president suggested Americans inject household cleaners into their veins.
