Advent Calendar RPS 2021, December 23

When you approach this door of the Calendar, you will feel like a real pleasure. “Oh no,” you mumble. “It will be another bloody time loop.” You’re the reader, that’s right! But this will be strong enough to start a new day and really make a mark on the wall.

Let’s go around for the powerful launch and powerful assassination of Deathloop!

Brendy Caldwell: Deathloop’s kick is sublime. Colt’s various powers in the timeloop shooter are good and all, but his powerful claws allow you to kill for free all day, every day (same day). This is one of the most cost-effective ways of this New Rock shoe sale. It also encapsulates everything I love about Arkane’s weirdest outing. Dishonored’s bleak face is stripped of his upbeat, jazzy shot, where stealth is no longer the primary means of attack. Got caught sneaking behind a crate in Deathloop? It’s time to snap your neck, shoot two faces, and strike the last defender off a cliff.

One of the earliest abilities you get is double jump, which really says it all. If there was a mechanic in the game more iconic of carefree movement and unrestrained chaos, I don’t know what it would be. You then have the ability to fuse enemy minds, so when a bad guy gets shot in the stomach, his two nearby mates die from the sheer violence of psychic empathy.

And you will really want to kill these monsters. The main villains on Deathloop’s icy Blackreef Island are complicated people. They are corporate handbags with an unstoppable urge to be liked. Egomaniacal artists wrap themselves up in a relationship that can only be more toxic if they date a bucket of mud. They were all caught up in a chronological anomaly where they happened to repeat the same day over and over again. These people are limitless. Imagine if the influencers and startup brothers responsible for the Fyre Festival never left that island in the Bahamas and became raving superstars. It’s basically Blackreef.

I admit those who have lived in Arkane for a long time can have beef. Some of the complex interactions between powers, weapons, and environments you find in the Dishonored game won’t appear here, thanks to a stripped-down menu of abilities. But for an enthusiastic first-person shopper, less is more. I’ve long thought of pause-wheel menus as a flow-crushing plague in game design and existing as an imperfect solution to the problem of guns full of pockets that wouldn’t exist if you only held a few. more guns. Deathloop gives you less guns and less power. But the result is more impactful.

Get the Strelak Verso, a pair of shotguns that can be dual-use or click together like a violent Lego to become a machine-fired rifle. Or the Fourpounder, a chubby pistol with the clean, sleek shape of large automatic cameras in the movie Looper. You can find one of the following with bullets that leave a cloud of toxic, explosive gas and it’s awesome. But how many kilometers can you get from nearby spider-like grenades or hackable, moveable turrets.

In short, there is a lot of work to be done. And when you run out of ammo? Good. Polish the Doc Martens. In Deathloop, you can actually kick your ass.

Rebecca: It’s fair to say I’m the one Arkane’s longtime Brendy mentioned: Prey and Dishonored are both up there among my favorites. If you want an uninterrupted 45-minute monologue about why Obligatory to play Daud’s DLCs before tackling Dishonored 2, or how Prey’s criminally overlooked Mooncrash expansion is itself one of the best games of 2018, I’m Your Girl.

So of course I joined Deathloop expecting to enjoy it. But what I didn’t expect was that it showed me something I never realized previous games had been missing: a good sense of humour. Sure, there are humorous sides to the lore and setting of Dishonored and Prey. They just really never expand on the characters themselves, all (understandably, but still) pretty serious about the situations they find themselves in.

On the other hand, Deathloop never fails to see the humorous side. One of my favorite animations in this game plays at the end of Julianna’s Invasion. She and Colt can do a punch, only for the winner of the match to step back and do it meow face the person they just killed gleefully. Just try to picture Corvo Attano or Morgan Yu having just as much fun. You really can’t. I’m not saying this inherently makes Deathloop better than Arkane’s other games, but it certainly sets a very different tone.

Dishonored games in particular make you feel guilty every time you take a lethal approach to solving a problem, especially if your victim is clearly just an ordinary monster doing the job their crap. But in Deathloop, until you reach that final loop, you know that everyone you hurt will wake up this morning like nothing ever happened. So, unlike the Arkane tradition, you are encouraged to actively embark on your business with a clear conscience. Just really let yourself live in the moment and enjoy those ragdoll physics as you launch another Eternalist off the cliff edge and into the sea.

Imogen: I’ll try to refrain from reiterating how great Arkane is when it comes to stealth killings, because everything I want to say is already well arranged. So instead, I wanted to highlight how great Arkane is at making Style. The main soundtrack gives me a lot of pleasure listening, original song Déjà Vu like listening to a Bond theme. Then you have absolute fashion icons Colt and Julianna. I’ve written about it before, but their costumes are interesting to look at. Whenever special-dressed Julianas intrude into my game, I hope they don’t have stealth powers; I want this fight to be a fashion show. Arkane’s art department really went to great lengths in making this game look and sound absolutely stunning. Even if you don’t play it, I recommend you watch some of its cutscenes, listen to its music, or browse its concept art.
