Rebecca: I may have two hands, but alas I only have one brain, so I can practically only play one video game at a time. Usually, I’m forced to choose between two of my favorite playstyles: knocking down enemies in close-quarter combat or falling hopelessly in love with fictional characters.
Enter the Boyfriend Dungeon, which actively encourages you to do both at the same time! And it’s not just a case of optional romantic cutscenes with your party members as you’re safely out in combat. No, Boyfriend Dungeon properly integrates hacky-slashy bits with smooth bits in an innovative way: by letting you romance your weapon.
Dating-simulation fusion games are a particular weak point of mine, so a visual-fiction-slash-dungeon crawler with human-weapon could shape-shift data already in my Steam favorites list about a second after I found out it was an issue. That was literally years ago, but when the game finally came out in August, it didn’t disappoint.
Battles in the Boyfriend Dungeon aren’t particularly hard to master, but it’s fun if you’re not looking for a challenge on par with Hades. Honestly: this is definitely a dungeon crawler designed to be accessible to dating sim fans, not the other way around. But if that’s the experience you go through, the only real fault I think you’ll find with Boyfriend Dungeon is not having enough.
Kitfox Games has announced plans for DLC that will add more content to both halves of the game, but for now you have to be content with crawling just two dunjes, admittedly playable first. when you get to the end of the story . In reality, though, the dunjes in this game were never the star of the show: it would always be the enchanting swords.
For me, the engaging writing and well-rounded characters are what lifted Boyfriend Dungeon from a fun game with a fun joke as its central premise, to one of the best. my favorite of the year. Everyone I know who has played it has had some strong feelings about their weapon of choice which, in my opinion, is indicative of a game with a visual novel element that has worked. fulfills its task well.
In my case, despite knowing absolutely nothing about K-pop and knowing only a little bit more about Star Wars, by the end of the game I had a crush on the blue-haired maknae idol and barber part-time Seven. I won’t spoil anything, but suffice it to say that his story impressed me by handling a sensitive subject close to my heart with a refreshing nuance. His romantic route feels light and real, and draws me into the feeling to the point where I find that I can’t envision choosing anyone else as my partner/weapon for end game. dunj. He really is the perfect physical boyfriend. He just wants to cuddle on the couch and watch horror movies instead of going to a nightclub on our date, and if I do a hit combo he can shoot lightning through six guys. my enemies at the same time. Swoon.
