Advent Calendar RPS 2021, December 1

It’s the first day of the Dating Calendar, so to stand out, we’ll all put on some medieval armor and lunge at our enemies waving swords around. Or maybe wave the fish around. Up to you.

Go forth, brave knight! that is Chivalry 2!

Matt Cox: A swordfight becomes much more intimate than a gunfight. I’ve lost out on multiplayer FPS where death comes instantly and often, and usually by who happens to spot the other first. Swords is not like that. They are individuals, they ask for an exchange. Every hit has to be fought, every win – and much more than clicking in the right spot quickly.

Chivalry 2 understands this, because Chivalry 2 has separate buttons for stabbing, kicking, pushing, slashing, banging on the head, and killing people with specific weapons. You can scroll through. You can duck. You can (and should) shout war cries to inspire allies and instill fear in your enemies. The rigor goes much deeper than in the first Chivalry, and perhaps even deeper in Mordhau.

Castle gates crumbled under cannon fire, towers turned to dust, and villages burned while giant masts shattered into the ground in a spectacle worthy of the Battlefield.

This is definitely where chopping comes in at its most polished and flamboyant. Castle gates crumbled under cannon fire, towers turned to dust, and villages burned while giant masts shattered into the ground in a spectacle worthy of the Battlefield. The biggest clashes take place over vast, multi-stage objectives that often reward the best player on a team the chance to take on a particularly important role, such as surviving as a player. a Grand Duke or run away like a huge topless prisoner. Even if you don’t want to dive into mastering the elaborate swordplay, the action scenes are worth it.

Of course, I’m here to master my favorite swordsmanships, and fighting that I initially thought was too forgiving compared to Mordhau turned out to have its advantages. Chivalry 2’s health is huge, the blocking ability is almost limitless, and everyone moves just a little bit slower. That means you get less rampage when a single warrior kills everyone around them with a few well-judged hits, but it also means everyone – claim and hulking knight – will survive a lot longer. The slower pace really prolongs the electrically overwhelming moments when you’re surrounded, plunging between enemies like Zorro in a musketeer plane, somehow staying alive. The highs aren’t as high, but they come more often and last longer when they do.

Of course, Chivalry 2 is also very silly. One of the maps begins with randomly selected players fighting in a duel of honor in a courtyard, while scores of nobles appear on either side clutching harps, roosters, and cakes. noodles, before immediately throwing them at each other’s heads. There are dozens of custom dialogues that let you acknowledge and enhance almost any situation, whether you’re defending an enemy who’s decided he wants to be friends, or rubbing shoulders with the fact that you’ve just chained a great matrix to dodge into a sudden speed boost in the air. You can ask your teammates to launch you literally behind enemy lines. I don’t know what else to say to you.

It took the place of Mordhau when I went to chop them down, which is quite a feat. A lot of the games on this calendar are impressive experiences you’ll remember forever, but Chivalry 2 has the staying power and it’s worth it. I’m still playing it, six months later. I’m currently in the phase of pointing my shield at everyone while pretending to be Captain America, repeatedly parrying it in the air while shouting chat about how everyone facing my mighty shield must how to give in. What more could a chopstick fan ask for?
