A massive fire that broke out in a high-rise building in New York City on Sunday morning has left at least 19 people dead, including nine children, according to the mayor’s office.
Officials reported earlier in the day that the fire had left more than 63 people injured, 32 in a life-threatening condition.
“This is a terrifying, terrible, painful moment for New York City,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference.
“This is going to be one of the worst fires we’ve seen in modern times in New York City,” he added.
Fire officials did not say what caused the fire, but FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said it did not appear suspicious. Fire police are investigating the cause.

According to the FDNY, about 200 members of the organization responded to five fire alarms at 333 East 181 Street in the Bronx on Sunday morning, after the department received multiple fire alarm calls from residents on the floors. top of high-rise buildings. .
Nigro said units arrived within three minutes of the first call of the fire at a two-story apartment in the 19-story building. He said the fire spread because the door to the apartment was left open.
“This smoke spanned the entire height of the building – totally unusual,” Nigro said. “Members found victims on every floor of the stairs and are taking them out in cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.”
Nigro said all injuries were caused by severe smoke inhalation.
The last time the city witnessed such a deadly fire might have been The Fire of Happy Land in 1990, Nigro said. 87 people have died after a social club arsonist trapped attendees inside.
