For every little trend that enters a collection, there is an inspiration. Some designers may cite a trip to Paris or a desire to reimagine ’90s sensibility. But there’s always a hidden influence that doesn’t always get the respect it deserves: time. street page. Of course, it should be noted that the fact that streetwear became a popular trend can be traced back to Black leather stylistBlack designers and Black artists who, from the ’90s to earlier years, set the stage for sport as we know it today.
Streetwear wouldn’t be what it is today without giants like the late Virgil Abloh, who combined couture and sportswear during his tenure as artistic director of the menswear collection. Louis Vuitton and the founder of Off-White – and musicians like Lil Kim, who dared to wear tracksuits on the red carpet before every celebrity was discovered Juicy Couture’s velcro set. But the biggest influencers are the ones with lots of hyphens like June Ambrose, who has managed to combine music, fashion and cinema for more than 30 years of work. Ambrose is a legend in and of herself. She’s the costume designer behind iconic movies (like Belly) and music videos (such as “The Rain” by Missy Elliott and “Black Is King” by Beyoncé). She was named Puma’s creative director in 2020 and has since helped launch the brand’s first women’s basketball collection.
She’s basically one of the driving forces behind streetwear today, so naturally, we jumped at the chance to interview her. Up ahead, you’ll hear Ambrose talk about her career, her style, and the trends she’s endorsing for spring.
