Since the 2019 election, Australia has suffered from devastating bushfires and unprecedented flooding. Meanwhile, the news of extreme weather such as extreme heat waves in India and Pakistan has flooded. And international pressure to act on climate change is growing.
Perhaps in response, Australia’s position on climate change has become less partisan. A new poll my colleagues and I organized with about 1,100 Australians found almost 90% now believe that climate change is a problem. That’s the average across all politics, from the Greens to A country.
Not only that, but almost 80% of us are optimistic, believing that Australia can halve its emissions by 2030.

In our 2022 poll, the views converged. Now, a similar proportion of left-wing and right-wing voters both appreciate the government’s need for action on environmental destruction and climate change.

In short, we find that concern for the environment is nearly universal. Absolutely 94% of the total voters believe that environmental destruction is a problem and 89% believe that climate change is a problem.

We trust the evidence when the experiment can be repeated and achieve the same results.
We believe in science when the evidence is consistent with a theory and that theory predicts future events.
Scientists predict global warming will lead to extreme weather, will be more intense and more frequent, but despite the fact that extreme weather events were reported before 1960 more commonly than at any time since.

How do the policy positions of this apparently climate-skeptic party harmonize with Professor Baddeley’s statement of strong support for climate action, even among One voters? nation?
That is possible Professor Michelle Baddeley believes that One Nation voters are so dumb that they don’t understand that One Nation are hardline climate skeptics.
But it seems that Professor Baddeley’s poll is somehow failing to capture voters’ genuine views? At least it seems One Country voters don’t think climate action is a priority, compared to other issues.
We’ve all seen a flurry of increasingly absurd claims about the widespread need for climate action, especially in the run-up to Australia’s federal election this Saturday, but in my opinion, Professor Baddeley’s statement of strong near-universal support for real climate action shark jump.
