Scooters are electric vehicles, so there are a few things you should and shouldn’t do if you get one. First, if you’ve never ridden an electric scooter and are nervous about buying one, try a ride-sharing service. Companies like Lime, Lyft and Bird allow you to buy a submersible for a small amount, which is a good way to check out the waters.

Check your local laws. Are electric scooters legal where you live? If so, what is the maximum speed limit? Do you have to stay in a bike lane? Over the past two years, motorbike taxi riders have become a common sight in many cities. Chances are your state or city already has rules about riding them.
Don’t charge your escooter overnight or when no one is home. The manuals of some of the scooters I’ve tested say the same. Not every battery or charger is available UL certification for safety’s sake, and I’ve seen too much The story of the battery fire. Always stay by your side when you are charging the scooter and unplug it when charging is complete.
Try to avoid the rain. You’ll want to test your scooter to see if it has an official IP water and dust resistance rating. Otherwise, avoid riding in the rain. If there is a rating, it is still advisable to get out of the rain quickly. More importantly, do Not Plug the charger in without wiping the charging port and make sure it’s dry.
Do not store your escooter at too high a temperature. Extreme heat and extreme cold are not good for the battery. Store your escooter at home in a cool, dry place, just like you would with your breakfast cereal!
Only one driver, please. Unless a manufacturer explicitly states that a glider can carry two people, there should be only one rider on deck. These vehicles can go pretty fast, and you don’t have to go more than 20 mph to be in a serious accident. You should also check the weight limit on your scooter.
Check the manufacturer’s service and repair options. Before you invest in a new scooter, check if the manufacturer offers spare parts or can service your scooter if any issues arise. You may want to connect with your local motorcycle and tram shops to see if they have experience with the brand you are using.
Do not leave your driver unattended outdoors. Scooters aren’t easy to secure, so it probably goes without saying that they’re easy to steal. Roll them indoors if you need to, but keep them in sight if you don’t want to walk home, helmet in hand.
