MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali government says five civilians were killed when al-Qaida-linked extremists stormed a regional government office in the capital on Sunday.

The founder of the Aamin ambulance service, Abdulkadir Adan, told the AP news agency that his team had collected 16 injured people from the scene.

The extremist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Banadir regional government headquarters in Mogadishu.

An employee at the headquarters said the attack began with a suicide bombing before gunmen stormed in and exchanged gunfire with security guards. Staff member Mustafa Abdulle said most of the workers were rescued by security forces.

Al-Shabab often carries out attacks in Mogadishu. The federal government last year declared “all-out war” on the extremist group and has recaptured several communities the militants have controlled in central and southern Somalia.
