312 Horses Nominated Early to 2022 Triple Crown


A total of 312 3-year-old hybrids are eligible to compete in this year’s Triple Crown series when the early nomination period ends on January 29.

Each horse in the 2019 foal is nominated via a $600 payout to compete in any of the Triple Crown races: the 148th race of the $3 million Kentucky Derby due Woodford Reserve (G1) presented May 7 at Churchill Downs (1 1/4 mile); 147th run of $1.5 million Preakness Stakes (G1) May 21 at Pimlico racetrack (1 3/16 miles); and the 154th run of the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 11 at Belmont Park (1 and a half miles).

Early nominations fell 4.3%, or 14 horses, from last year’s total of 326.

The group is led by 1st graders Corniche , Echo Zulu , Jack Christopher , Pinehurst and Rattle N Roll .

The Echo Zulu is one of six eligible fillets.

The nominees also include a record 21 horses based in Japan along with two in Europe and one from Dubai.

Todd Pletcher leads all trainers with 42 horses nominated for the Triple Crown and is followed by Brad Cox (26), Chad Brown (23), Steve Asmussen (20) and Bob Baffert (18) ). Baffert was taken by Churchill Downs Inc. suspension from the 2022 Kentucky Derby. CDI suspended him through the conclusion of the Churchill Downs spring 2023 meeting following a post-race drug test from 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for the corticosteroid betamethasone, which was not allowed on race day in Kentucky.

Corniche and Pinehurst are currently being trained by Baffert. Horses trained by a trainer suspended by the CDI are not eligible to earn qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Anthony Manganaro’s Siena Ranch enters into a partnership with 24 horses — 12 horses with SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable, and consortium. Stonestreet Stables and a dozen others partner with WinStar Farm and others — to lead all owners.

Gunman led all the males with 16 Triple Crown nominations, followed by Into Mischief (14), Quality Sugar (12), and Tapit (11).

There are 250 Kentucky half-bloods, representing 80.1% of the nominees. Other states and countries represented are Japan (17), New York (14), Florida (13), Pennsylvania (4), California (3), Canada (3), Ireland (3), Louisiana ( 2), Maryland (2) ), and Illinois (1).

Horses not nominated in the early stages can qualify online at www.TheTripleCrown.com with a late payment of $6,000 due on Monday, March 28. Last year there were nine delinquent nominations.

Any horse not nominated during the early or late nomination period may qualify through an additional nomination payment due at time of entry: Kentucky Derby ($200,000), Preakness ($150,000). USD) and Belmont ($50,000).

Thirteen horses swept the Triple Crown series: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946) , Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmation (1978), American pharoah (2015), and Evenly (2018).
