Perhaps the most common mistake I see people making with such photos is using a focal length that is too wide without considering how it shrinks the mountains. There is a natural desire to cover as much of the scene as possible, but it is important to remember that wide-angle lenses tend to push the background away and detract from the background, and as such, they can weaken the background. The impressive physical presence makes them feel dramatic in the first place. Usually, a slightly longer focal length can produce a more powerful image.
