1. Make Viral Sharing Easy

With any shot, provide the same day demo images to clients and other vendors involved in the shoot, along with clear permissions, instructions, and even tips to help with the shoot. sharing is more likely and more impactful.

Most photographers share images with suppliers and clients after they have sifted and processed all of their images, which can be weeks or even months after shooting. But after that, much of the hype and interest cooled. Sharing on the same day or over several days multiplies image distribution and turns each person involved in the shoot into a marketing tool for your brand. This feature is suitable for almost any type of photography, from wedding photography, family photography to event photography.

Action steps to share images

To implement this strategy, follow these steps:

  1. Rate your best images during the shoot.
  2. Using Lightroom Mobile and Lightroom Presetsedit a set of opening images from your “starred” images during breaks or immediately after shooting.
  3. Send images to clients and other vendors from the shoot, such as stylists, florists, designers, event organizers, venue/venue managers, etc.
  4. Along with images, include explicit permissions for them to use the image on their own social media, ask them to tag you when they share, or link to you if they use it on their website. (Learn more about SEO in the master class).
  5. You can even go a step further and provide full vendor shots/credits, sample captions, or event tips for the best posting. These can streamline the process and help you maximize your visibility.

2. Create a slideshow of the day

If you are photographing an event, such as a wedding, Bar Mitzvah, or other party, same-day slideshows are one of the best marketing tricks to get you more referral business.

At the event, show 20-30 of your favorite images from earlier moments of the same event using your iPad, laptop, or even projected onto a screen (if the DJ can do this) . Next to the presentation, put some of your business cards. Of course, get your client and event coordinator’s approval before doing this. With a great set of images, this simple strategy can boost your referral business.

Think about this. Every event you shoot is filled with guests in the same life stage, age, and target audience as the actual customers. The problem is that most photographers never finish their work in front of these people because by the time the images are transferred and shared, often weeks later, very few people have seen them. To get around this, we started showing same-day slideshows.

Every day the slideshow we create generates at least two to three additional customers that are already sold and ready to book! It is truly one of the best marketing tools, and it is also a rock star move that makes customers ecstatic when they see the image. Create a buzz at every event you photograph!

Action steps for the slideshow of the day

The process is similar to the trailers mentioned above.

  • During the event, star your favorite images on camera.
  • After you have some downtime, transfer those favorites to your phone via the camera’s Bluetooth/wireless app.
  • From there, load them into Lightroom Mobile and add presets on the fly. For all of our work we use Visual Stream Presets.
  • Then with the images in Lightroom, just click the slideshow icon.
  • If possible, send the image to the DJ to display on the projector.
  • When streamlined, the process can take as little as 15-30 minutes from start to finish. On a busy day, if you’re free, have an assistant do the work.

3. Use Designs and Gifts

Next, let’s talk about collaborative shoots. Between your paying jobs, put together a list of your favorite vendors for a styled shoot idea. These vendors are other businesses that match your ideal target audience in terms of location, demographics, age, etc. They need visuals and you need a network, so that’s the situation. Mutually beneficial!

The idea of a style shoot can be an opportunity to play and visualize for you and your supplier team rather than doing what the client wants. Nothing new so far, right? But this is a hack. Instead of models, find real-life “models” with a social media giveaway. How you do the giveaway is entirely up to you, but just check the social media platform’s terms and conditions. Use this as an opportunity to grow your social media presence and engagement. And by using real-life models, you have a great chance of converting your participants or even selected models into real-life customers.

Action steps for collaborative photography

  1. Come up with an interesting concept to pitch with a group of vendors (makeup artists, florists, venues, designers, planners, etc.).
  2. Come up with the concept and assemble your team! Be very clear about expectations and timing.
  3. Define rules and input methods. You can use a third-party giveaway plugin like Gleam.io or just go for something simple, like using each platform’s native commenting and tagging system.
  4. Create a marketing image for each vendor to share. This is extremely easy using consumer design software like Canva.
  5. Have all collaborating vendors announce the contest on their social media accounts on the same date and time.
  6. Choose the winner and make the shot!

Benefits and Results

Do this right and let’s talk about all the things you will get:

  • Close relationships with suppliers.
  • Offers over 50 amazing final images that can be used for websites, portfolios, etc.
  • Create content for blogs and for many SEO-based articles, which we will discuss in other articles.
  • Offers 50+ images for social media that can be published from time to time as you see fit.
  • Practice new techniques and create new conceptual work.
  • Grow your social media accounts.
  • Get more referrals from style session related vendors.
  • Convert participants and winners into customers.

As you can see, collaborative shooting is one of the best ways to check every tile through a single shot!
