2025 Toyota LandCruiser Prado v GWM Tank 500: Specifications Battle


A rejuvenated classic is coming – the 250 Series Toyota LandCruiser Prado.

It has a tough new design, higher technology and a more modern transmission, but costs up to $12,500 more than the previous generation.

It still has the 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine under the bonnet, but it now has a mild hybrid system.

Looking to claim its off-road crown is a new kid on the block: GWM 500 tanknew to the market in 2024.

It’s the biggest, most luxurious and most expensive SUV to grace GWM’s Australian showrooms, and fills the void left by the now-defunct model. Haval H9 locally.

The Tank 500 is unique in its segment as it only comes with a petrol hybrid engine, however it is significantly cheaper than the new Prado and still has a range of technology and safety features.

Pricing

Prado pricing for 2025 starts at $72,500 before on-roads – up $9670 over 2024.

The off-road-ready Altitude will also return next year (having been absent since 2017), making it a five-man squad for the new-generation Prado.

The Tank 500 is new for 2024, so there’s no previous generation to compare it to. However, even in its most expensive variant, it is still cheaper than the entire Prado range after accounting for on-road running costs.

There are only two variants so this is not a direct comparison. We’ve laid out the prices in a separate table below for clarity, GWM lists these prices as drive-away prices compared to Toyota excluding on-road costs.

Powertrain and efficiency

With a turbocharged hybrid powertrain, the Tank 500 achieves an output power of more than 100kW. It also has about 150Nm more torque than the Prado.

Comes with the Tank’s turbocharged gasoline engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission, combined with the vehicle’s only electric motor.

The new Prado features a 48V mild-hybrid system, although rather than increasing power, it aims to take the strain off the ancillary functions. It incorporates a generator and 48V battery.

According to Toyota’s global press release, it has a fuel capacity of 110L, larger than the Tank 500 with an 80L tank. The Prado also has greater towing capacity.

Both cars have full-time four-wheel drive with terrain control and selectable low-range transmissions.

Size

The two cars have similar body dimensions and the same wheelbase, while even the heaviest Prado is on par with the Tank in terms of weight.

The Tank has a slightly higher ground clearance, along with approach, ramp-over and departure angles of 30 degrees, 22.5 degrees and 24 degrees respectively. Toyota has not yet detailed these figures for the Prado.

According to Toyota’s global press release, the new Prado has “408 liters of luggage space” in at least one of its configurations, although trunk capacity in other seating configurations is yet to be revealed. highway.

Meanwhile, the Tank offers the 98L as a seven-seater, the 795L in a five-seat configuration, and the 1459L with both rear rows folded.

For comparison, the old Prado is smaller than the 2025 model but has a maximum trunk capacity of 1833L.

Service and warranty

Like all Toyota models in Australia, the LandCruiser Prado will come with a 5-year, unlimited kilometer warranty.

Owners of the new Prado can enjoy a seven-year engine and transmission warranty, as long as it is serviced on time at a Toyota dealer.

Toyota will also offer capped-price servicing for the first 10 visits (5 years or 100,000 km) within a period of 6 months or 10,000 km, whichever comes first.

Meanwhile, Tank 500 is supported by a 7-year, unlimited km warranty according to GWM standards.

GWM offers seven years of roadside assistance with the Tank 500, along with seven years of capped-price servicing and an eight-year, unlimited kilometer battery pack warranty.

Safety

Tank 500 has a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP.

It scored 85% for adult protection, 93% for child protection, 81% for vulnerable road user protection and 84% for safety assistance.
