2024 3M Open: Illness forces Billy Horschel to withdraw from tournament after runner-up finish at The Open
Billy Horschel withdrew from the 2024 3M Open on Thursday before his first round tee time. Citing a fever, the Open runner-up was unable to return to full fitness during pre-opening warm-ups at TPC Twin Cities and will instead try to get healthy ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Adam Long replaced Horschel on the field.
“Unfortunately, [I] had to withdraw from the 3M Open,” Horschel wrote on social media. “Woke up with a fever, body aches and a stiff back. Tried to warm up and try but my body wouldn’t let me. Really disappointed in WD as my family and I enjoyed it last year and we were hoping to improve on last year’s T-12. Sorry to 3M and everyone involved with this event. Sorry to the fans too. Thank you to everyone who supported me over the last few days as I was out getting ready for this week. Again I apologize!!”
Horschel entered the week with the best finish of his major championship career. Holding the lead after 54 holes at Royal Troon, the red-hot Florida native finished in second place, two shots behind Xander Schauffele, at The Open. The result moved Horschel up to 26th in the FedEx Cup standings with two regular-season events remaining.
While Horschel may not play this week in Minnesota, he is likely to be in the regular-season finale, the Wyndham Championship, in two weeks based on his previous schedule. With four top-11s in his last seven starts at Sedgefield Country Club, Horschel could cap off a strong regular season and all but guarantee his spot in the Tour Championship at East Lake, where the top 30 eventually qualify.
