Jeep’s Wagoneer line is gaining momentum for 2023 with new long(er)wheelbase “L” variants that will give Jeep car the tools needed to really take on the large SUV segment, plus a new pair of engines to replace Wagoneer old pair of Hemi V8s. We have provided a Quite comprehensive sizing and powertrain comparison of Wagoneer compared to other full-size SUVs when the short-wheelbase model launches in 2021, and it looks like we’ll have to do something else, as the L throws both of those categories completely to their ears.
The Wagoneer L’s 130-inch wheelbase (7 inches over the standard Wagoneer) would indeed be the shortest in the full-size luxury SUV class, but not by much. Lincoln’s Navigator LOST (sorry) registers at 131.6 inches and Cadillac Escalade ESV and GMC Yukon XL boasts 134 inches between the axles. The total length of the Wagoneer L has increased by one foot.
The powertrain situation is even worse. Wagoneer L will come standard with new Stellantis Hurricane . twin turbocharger engine produces 420 hp and 468 lb.-ft. of torque. The Grand Wagoneer The L will benefit from a high-powered version, which Jeep is calling the “Hurricane Twin Turbo 510.” “510” denotes its power output; Torque test at 500 lb-ft.
We called it the “Hemi alternative” when it was announced, and Wagoneer L was our first taste of exactly that. Standard Wagoneer powered by Hemi 5.7 liter with lightweight eTorque mixture good system for 392 hp and 404 lb-ft. It’s the most powerful standard engine of any large American luxury SUV, and the Hurricane will lead it. The Grand Wagoneer’s 6.4-liter V8 produces 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque; the Hurricane’s 510 version is also capable of an easy beat and now offers class-leading torque.
That’s great, but if that power and complexity doesn’t come with weight reduction, will the Jeep really be able to move the ball down the field? The storm is believed to be about 150-200 pounds lighter than its equivalent Hemis. Until Jeep offers the standard Wagoneer with both of its new Hurricane engines, it’s going to be difficult to make an apple-to-apple comparison, but we’re pleased to see that the Wagoneer L 2WD’s base weight is only approx. 100 pounds more than the standard Wagoneer. However, the Grand Wagoneer L appears to have gained almost 300 pounds over the equivalent standard wheelbase.
Weight aside, Jeep can at least say that these more powerful inline six-wheelers are a bit more energy saving of the Wagoneer L variants compared to the Hemi V8 which is one of the two smaller versions truck. The Wagoneer L 2WD has been rated at 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined; 4WD down to 16/22/19. Wagoneer 2WD standards tested at 16/22/18; 4WD at 15/22/17. The Grand Wagoneer L with its 510 hp (4WD only, remember) is rated at 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined; non-L grade with Hemi 6.4 liter and 4WD rated 13/18/15.
Inside, the first and second rows are virtually identical to the standard Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Even the dimensions of the third row passengers remain the same; where the L really shines is the cargo room. The Wagoneer L offers 44.2 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third row of seats (up from 27.4) – outperforming the Escalade ESV and Yukon XL. Drop the third row and it expands to 88.2 cubic feet. Drop the middle row down and you have enough space to place a flat sheet of 4×8 plywood (130.9 cubic feet). All L models have six lanyard loops in the cargo area, and Grand Wagoneer L models come standard with a rail system for cargo management.
Everything else about the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L will essentially reflect the existing “short” wheelbase parity, with 2WD available on the Wagoneer L and standard 4WD on the Grand. Prices are yet to be announced; Stay tuned for that a little closer to the uptime.
