2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo revealed as one of the glamorous electric wagons


Just because Porsche Taycan Just because it’s electric doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to follow the same usual menu of additional variations that come once a year after a new model or generation is introduced. Already introduced basis, 4S and turbocharger versions, plus off-roadish, like wagons Cross Turismo, it was only a matter of time before the next players in the squad stepped onto the pitch: 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS and Taycan GTS Sport Turismo.

As with other GTS models, the new Taycans are a more enthusiast-oriented choice with a focus on precise handling rather than full power. To that end, the suspension hardware is done, but the calibration and tuning is special for the GTS, Porsche says the result is improved response and a greater sense of connection to the road. Adaptive air suspension, active suspension management, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and the Sport Chrono package are all fitted.

Front brake has a 390mm rotor, up from 360mm in the 4S, although the caliper and rear rotor continue. You can also upgrade to Surface Coated Brakes, which have a tungsten carbide coating, or Ceramic Hybrid Brakes.

The new GTS Sport Turismo has a handling advantage over other versions of the scooter-like body style in that it doesn’t share the same 20mm increase in ground clearance over the sedan. It also lacks wheel arches. This is why GTS is Sport Turismo rather than Cross Turismo. That’s also why, it looks so much better, especially in the sensual Carmine Red, considered Porsche’s go-to paint choice for the GTS models.

At the same time, there are roof rails and rack mount stiffeners, so the Sport Turismo still offers extra versatility far beyond the maximum cargo space of 42.8 cubic feet.

As for performance, this is where the Taycan differs from the GTS versions of other models. Usually, they lean closer to the letter S, with only a modest increase in output. However, the Taycan essentially splits the huge gap between the 4S (462 hp) and the Turbo (670 hp) with a combined output of 590 hp. This is done by just adding the Turbo’s larger rear engine, and the result is a 0-60 time, with Launch Control, of 3.5 seconds. Again, this splits the difference between the 4S 3.8 seconds and the Turbo 3.0 seconds.

NS the battery shared with the Turbo and Turbo S, the 93.4 kilowatt-hour “Performance Battery Plus” features an 800-volt architecture. With the ability to fast charge up to 270kW, Porsche says the machine can charge from 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes. Range estimates will be released later, but given the battery, it looks like they’ll be at least slightly better than the Turbo’s 212-mile figure.

Visually, like other GTS models, there’s plenty of strong black trim everywhere, including an exclusive satin black finish to the 20-inch Taycan Turbo S Aero Design wheels. Even the matrix LED headlights are black. Additionally, Taycan’s Sport Design package in premium gloss black, usually a $6,040 option, adds a unique front apron, side skirts, and a rear diffuser.

The interior is wrapped in unique Race-Tex-like suede on the seats, dashboard, center console, steering wheel and headrests that are 18-way adjustable. The optional GTS interior package adds Carmine Red- (pictured) or Chalk contrast stitching throughout the cabin along with matching seat belts and GTS embroidery on the headrests. “Matte carbon” trim is added to the center console, steering wheel and door trims.

Prices start at $132,750 for the Taycan GTS sedan, including destination, and $134,650 for the Sport Turismo. Both can be ordered now with delivery expected (or at least hopefully) in Q2 2022.
