A reader Kenny Yong spotted a 2022 Honda HR-V moving in downtown KL. The third-generation HR-V, of course (if you count the boxy two-door car from the early 2000s; for most non-car enthusiasts, the first model was the ‘First HR-V’) is available in Malaysia – it’s a locally assembled model CKD anyway, and pre-production units have visited showrooms across the country for the customer to preview.
Here we see a new top-of-the-line HR-V in signature red, with full RS styling. Even though the badges are plastered on, we know that this is an RS e:HEV estimated to be RM140k. In fact, it is identical to RS Thailand e:HEV that we sampled recentlysave for the lack of black roof/A-pillars seen on our Thailand tester.
The official local launch of the HR-V is just around the corner, but we already have some details, like we joined the customer at the showrooms of KL / Selangor last weekend with our pen and notebook. That’s because photography is not allowed. Here’s what we know about the Malaysian version of the HR-V so far.
The HR-V will be available in a naturally aspirated variant (1.5 S), two turbocharged variants (Turbo E and Turbo V) and a hybrid variant (RS e: HEV). Sales consultants at all four showrooms we visited gave the ballpark estimated prices between RM120,000 and RM140,000, including sales tax.
All four variants will be powered by a variant of Honda’s 1.5-litre L engine, but in completely different configurations – Malaysia could very well be the only market in the world that has both. three – NA, turbo and hybrid. By the way, Thailand is only for mixed peoplewhile Indonesia has NA and turbo.
Facility S received L15ZE found in petrol city model, a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine produces 121 hp at 6,600 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. The E and V get the VTEC Turbo engine, the L15C3, which will have the same output as the Indonesian HR-V Turbo – 177 PS at 6,000 rpm and 240 Nm between 1,700 and 4,500 rpm. Maximum power is 5 PS down on Civic FE. Both the NA and turbo are paired with a CVT transmission.
The top HR-V RS is exclusive to the e:HEV hybrid powertrain, you can’t have an RS without an e:HEV, vice versa. The electric motor of the i-MMD is 22 hp more powerful than the engine of the City sedan and hatch, at 131 hp and the same torque of 253 Nm.
The naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle gasoline engine, which functions as a generator and can also drive the vehicle directly at higher speeds, produces 7 hp more power at 105 hp from 6,000 to 6,400 rpm and 127 Nm from 4,500 to 5,000 rpm.
