2022 Bermuda Championship scores: Seamus Power, Ben Griffin share Round 3 lead at Port Royal

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) – Seamus Power knows the storm and Port Royal well enough to realize he should have scored sooner. He did so on Saturday, adding a few late birdies and adding an under-65 to share the lead with Ben Griffin in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Power made a difficult 30-foot birdie on par-3 16 and made a 12-foot birdie on par-5 17 to atone for his only mistake, a bogey double on par-3 13. .

Griffin followed the same scenario in a strong wind with three birdies to open his round. He continued his downwind approach at 18 to 5 feet for birdies and 66s.

They are under 195 years old, two shots behind Kevin Yu (67 years old) and Aaron Baddeley (68 years old).

Power at number 48 is Port Royal’s highest-ranked player.

The 35-year-old Irishman is no stranger to windy conditions and has played in the Bermuda Championship in recent years.

“I knew I had to buy a birdie before I was 11 years old,” says Power.

He made four in a row early and under-6 on the day until a green miss and bad chip resulted in a double bogey on the 13th.

“A mistake. The wind blew it away in an insane amount,” Power said. “But I was able to stay there and that puts me in a good position to go tomorrow.”

Day 16 is the hardest tee because the green is directly to the right of the ocean and the wind blows from left to right.

“I don’t know how comfortable you feel when you’re 16 and you’re aiming your ball in the ocean,” Power said with a laugh. The shot was pinned high to the right of the green to the left of the left flag, and the putt crept into the low side of the hole.

Power has a PGA Tour win, the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky last year. He wants nothing more than a win to get off to a strong start to the PGA Tour and secure his spot in the masters.

For Griffin, even more is at stake.

He quit the game a few years ago and was working as a mortgage loan officer when he got inspired to play in a member-guest, and members put up money to make him eligible for the event. Korn Ferry Tour on Monday.

It was the beginning of small steps – qualifying for the Korn Ferry Tour, and then last year earning a full PGA Tour pass.

Winning Sunday comes with a two-year exemption.

“It’s been really strange for the past year and two months to be comfortable on the golf course and go out and try to win,” Griffin said. “When you’re playing mini-tour events and you’re trying to get to the top 10 just to break even, just having enough money to be able to make it to the second qualifying round, it’s not necessarily the easiest. .

“Now that I have this bit of freedom, I can go out there and try to win golf tournaments.”

Ben Crane, whose most recent win was in 2014, started the third round with a one-shot lead and stumbled at the end with four bogeys in a five-hole stretch before he caught last hole with a score of 73. He fell six shots behind.
